Dear fellow Scala enthusiasts,

we're having a big Scala night on October 7 as two foreign speakers visiting Prague will give us exciting talks. There will also be a Scala quiz for a free ticket to Scala.IO conference!

19:30 - 20:30 Jon Pretty: Introduction to Rapture I/O + coding session

Rapture I/O (http://rapture.io/) is a fledgling library for Scala which provides a consistent, intuitive and extensible API for handling common I/O operations, such as sending HTTP requests and streaming data between files, URLs and sockets.

Rapture I/O offers the functionality of java.io, but unifies its features into simpler, more coherent and higher-level concepts, allowing tasks which once took several lines of code to be often accomplished in just one, taking full advantage of Scala's rich syntax.

20:30 - 21:30 DB Tsai: Introduction to Apache Spark + coding session

Apache Spark (https://spark.apache.org/) is a fast and general engine for large-scale data processing. Spark fits into the Hadoop open-source community, building on top of the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS). However, Spark is not tied to the two-stage MapReduce paradigm, and promises performance up to 100 times faster than Hadoop MapReduce for certain applications.

21:30 - 21:45 Scala quiz for a free ticket to Scala.IO conference

There will be a short quiz. Who will be the first to provide correct answers will win a free ticket to Scala.IO (http://scala.io/) conference taking place in Paris on October 23-24.

Both talks are introductory and will contain a coding session. Instructions for preparing environment will be posted in comments section beforehand.

Please come between 19:15 and 19:30 so we can start on time. We need to leave the faculty before 22:00.
