    Nice branchout by the games guy to reach out to the rest of us old folks; the Universal Apps idea they announced at BUILD last April just gets a better rewrite every few weeks, so hopefully we'll get more opportunities to do those kinds of things at work someday (or at least at more local Hackathons).

    Hey Sahed, I am really interested in getting pre-started on this project. I have a MacBook. A couple of setup questions:
    1) What software should I have pre-loaded;
    2) What sites can I go to and get up to speed on
    specific software platform;
    3) Any templated. type ready to go prototypes I can
    run and get a real sense of how the app should
    work once completed and deployed.
    I usually work in SharePoint, SAS and SQL so this platform is very new to me and I want to swim once you start talking not be behind the 8-ball and asking
    a "thousand-and-3" irrelevant questions. Thanks Much

      Hi Mercedes, see my responses below:

      1. You will need Visual Studio installed. I would suggest the new (free) VS2013 Community Edition, which will replace all Express editions going forward. Since you have a Mac, I would suggest running Windows on your Mac, using Parallels.

      2. No previous experience on Universal Apps or Azure is necessary. Just a knowledge of Visual Studio and C# is highly recommended.

      To get a head start on Universal Apps, check out the following page:

      To get a head start on Azure, you can sign up for a free trial on

      But I will provide a BizSpark code to get free Azure credits.

      3. I will provide the presentation material and one or more demo projects after the event is over.

      Hope that helps!
