Arlington Cemetery - 150th Anniversary of Establishment|

The first burials at Robert E Lee's Arlington House were meant to contaminate the site and make it impossible for the site to return to use as a family home.

The Arlington National Cemetery was established on JUne 15, 1864, by order of General Montgomery Meigs of the Union Army's Quartermaster Corps.

We'll start at the top of the hill at the L'Enfant grave overlooking Washington, and walk around the cemetery, downhill back towards the Visitor's Center

A wonderful time was had by all, once again. Thank you, John for all the work and research you do. And, thank you for scheduling walkable weather. It was a nice walk on a nice day for walking. We could walk Ft Myer and ANC again another time. We always need to have the Traditional After Hike Activities, though. They are an important part of the experience...

Great hike! Thank you John for your research and sharing some history. Now I want to find a book and learn more. I am looking forward to more hikes.

Great hiking weather for the end of June - overcast skies with a little breeze. Sorry we missed some of you, the website had a map link for the location of L'Enfant's grave, but it didn't really say how to get there from the Visitor's Center.

There is a good app that can help you find the parking and meet up site:

L'Enfant's grave at Arlington House is about a 12 minute walk from the Visitor Center and Visitor parking.

I love hiking and learning about history, especially
Civil War history. My sister (also a history buff) and
I have been to at least 10 Civil War battle sites.
Quick question: How many miles is the Arlington
    Cemetery Hike?
