Pataspco Lite for Everyone - Beginner Friendly

IF THE PARKING LOT IS CLOSED, HERE IS THE ALTERNATE LOT TO MEET IN:

Rockburn Elementary School

‎6145 Montgomery Road

Elkridge, MD 21075

All the fun with half the calories. A relatively informal romp from Rockburn Branch Park into Morning Choice Trail in Patapsco...and possibly beyond... Slower than your average intermediate ride but more technically demanding than your average beginner ride, the vibe here will be pretty casual. Wanna go fast? Wrong ride. Want to work on some logovers? Bingo. We'll do around 86 of them.

This is a beginner friendly ride with a casual atmosphere.

Ride Leaders: Brian, Leah

Number: Brian (seven-o-tree...tree-too-tree...for-for-o-fife) Leah (fife-sevin-won) too-for-fife-fife-seex-too-oh

Please CALL if you suddenly can't make it or are running a few minutes late. Try to be ready to ride on time (good idea to get there 15 minutes early). If you've never been here, it's a good idea to get here even earlier so you're not late and stressed out. We will try to accommodate everyone, but will leave the lot promptly 15 minutes after the listed time.

This will be a relatively easy average pace with some technical terrain. This is a no-drop ride, but be patience and have a good attitude, as there are some technical, rocky spots and lots of logs and roots.

From MORE-MTB: Beginner/Casual:This is a very casual pace and completely beginner friendly. Someone who has little to no experience on a mountain bike should be able to stay with the group. Casual rides generally have many stops to allow everyone to rest as needed and to regroup. This is the pace often used for kids and beginner rides. The goal is to keep the group together and encourage / assist our new riders as needed. *Please note the terrain is not necessarily beginner friendly but completely doable. There are roots, logs streams but if you don't feel comfortable there are some ride-arounds or you can get off your bike. That is perfectly okay.*

Directions: Follow the above address. Upon entering the park, go to the end of the cul-de-sac and park. That's where we hit it. Look for a black Mazda or blue volkswagen.

What to bring:

Helmet (no helmet, no ride)

Mountain Bike (hybrid bikes are usually sketchy on trails)

Water

Snack (salty will help avoid cramps)

Multi-Tool (although you can borrow one)

Patch Kit

Extra Tube

Note: Please read the document "Meetup Ride Waiver" (found under menu: More > Files > Meetup Ride Waiver) before attending this event. Mountain biking is an inherently dangerous sport, and by attending this ride, you acknowledge and have read, agree to and fully understand the aforementioned waiver.

Hey guys. I think I may have lost my wallet while on the first part of the trail. Did anyone find it?

    January 26, 2014

    • Martes W.

Thanks guys for you help. I will be replacing ids tomorrow. Will also be seeing everyone real soon. You guys have a great set of trails to ride.

Thanks to another Patapsco rider, not with the group, I have my wallet back, right before I had to start replacing everything. Thanks Chris Gough!!!!

A word of advice for those using toe/hand warmers, you need to let the warmers sit at least 30 min in open air before stinking them on your socks, gloves or pockets, otherwise they won't get warm. What I do is that when I start driving to the trail I open the warmers and let them sit on my dash til I put my shoes on. PS Rafa I hope Diego had no issues with his feet.

    • Rafael R.

Thanks for the advice. Diego is fine. He liked the warmers so much that he used them the whole evening :)

I forgot to mention...A big shout out to Scott and Janet for donating jeans. I truly appreciate it and I know my students will too. If you email me your last names I can get donation letters for you. Thanks again! Also...if anyone still has pants out there that need new legs you still have time. Our collection will be sent in Feb. 14th.

I am newly re initiated. But I am still getting used to my clipless pedals, which were like $300 back when I used to ride, hence my never getting them, lol.

The best I can come up with is this: If the lot is closed, we'll meet at this location:

    Rockburn Elementary School
    ‎6145 Montgomery Road
    Elkridge, MD 21075

We'll ride at 12:15, giving time for people to find the alternate lot, which is literally around the corner. From the above lot we can ride right into the park, in spite of whether or not it's closed. I'd advise having the Meetup app on your smart phone, if you have one, even if it sort of sucks. You'll at least have the info.

Post any questions here. See you at 12:00 or 12:15!

I'm trying to figure out whether Rockburn Branch's Parking lot will be open or not. Do any of you live close by, or do any of you drive by it? If so, I'd love to know if the park was open today. If it's not open (on account of snow on the ground) we'll need to figure out something else. Hopefully not an issue, but watch this space for updates before the ride.

Oh yeah, prepare for a pretty slow and gruelling ride.

Hi everyone. I know this is last minute but I'm hoping you can all help my school out. We are doing a jeans for teens drive the homeless teenagers. The number one item of clothing requested from homeless teenagers is jeans. If you have any jeans or pants at home that you don't wear anymore could you bring them tomorrow? I will gladly take them off your hands and put them to good use. Thanks so much!

Maybe we could attach some sort of sled to the back of Brian's bike so he can haul us up the hills. ;)
