Penn Quarter must be the most elusive neighborhood in all of DC. Ask 5 long term residence where it is and your bound to get five answers. The one commonality is that the southern boarder is Pennsylvania Ave. The northern, eastern and western boarders are a different story. For the sake of simplicity we'll say it is somewhere East of downtown south of Shaw and West of Chinatown. No wonder they put the Spy Museum here.

Like much of the downtown area Penn Quarter has seen radical change in the past decade. Penn Quarter's initial growth occurred under the auspices of the Pennsylvania Avenue Development Corporation whose Pennsylvania Avenue Plan called for a mixed-use neighborhood. The major spike that fueled growth here and China Town was the construction of the MCI Center in 1997 (now known as the Verizon Center). Soon after its completion the sports fans followed by money and other investments grew at a rapid pace. Speaking of growth.. be sure to check out Freshfarm, the Thursday afternoon farmers market on 8th street. Another great asset to the city is the E street Theater on, well, E street (and 11th).

We are going to sample some of the fruits of this blossoming part of town.

Our first stop has been a dinner staple of this area for several years. Its a great steak house that has offered up a section of the upper balcony overlooking the main dining hall. We will have easy access to the bar and a couple pool tables.

Our second stop, Iron Horse (www.ironhorsedc.com), is the new kid on the block. Its the latest in a string of underground pool halls and game rooms for adults. You will recognize the decor as the owners also operate Atomic in Cleveland Park, Bedrock in Adams Morgan, and even Rocket Bar just down the road. Its the hot spot now so we will be keeping a close eye on the crown levels from the first place to insure we get our group there in time to establish our territory. With that said please try and get to the first venue before 9-915 as we may move there early.

Our last stop completes the night like any good night in downtown DC with a place to dance. Ultra Bar (www.ultrabardc.com) has several floors with many options in the style of music you may be seeking. For us we have been offered free entrance and drink specials.

See you next Saturday!
