Shelf and Solitude Lakes

This spot is the crown jewel of RMNP. It is off the regular trails and park officials do not encourage people to go there. As a result these lakes maintain their pristine beauty and you are unlikely to see many other people.

There is a half mile stretch that is pretty much straight up some 1,000 feet with some route finding and scrambling over fallen trees. If you think 1,000 feet is tough on a 4 mile hike, then you won't like it on a half mile hike. Obviously, this hike is for experienced hikers only.

To sign up add your name to the waiting list. The strongest (and fastest) hikers will be given preference.

Weather is unpredictable at these elevations, be prepared for anything.

Carpool Location

We will meet at the park-n-ride at 88th and Sheridan at 7:15. I expect to be at the north end of the lot. Look for my red SUV. We will carpool to the free shuttle parking lot in RMNP (across from Glacier Basin) and ride the shuttle to the Glacier Gorge trailhead. Those persons up north can meet us at the shuttle lot around 8:45--just be sure to let me know if you do not intend to meet at the carpool location. The free shuttle is inside RMNP, so someone from each vehicle will need to have a park pass.

Additional Terms and Conditions

You are responsible for knowing where the carpool location and the trailhead are and getting there on time. You are responsible for researching the trail and knowing your own limits. You are responsible for dressing appropriately and bringing the necessary gear, water and snacks. This trip--as are all trips with this group unless otherwise noted--is an all day outing, do not sign up if you have other obligations that afternoon. The pace will be on the faster side, and everyone is expected to keep up; you will need to be in good shape to do this trip. It is considered poor etiquette to cancel at the last minute; any cancellation within 24 hours of the start of this meetup for any reason will be treated as a no-show.
