MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE ROCK MOUNTAIN LAW CENTER & BIRTHDAY BUDDIES:
What is The Rocky Mountain Children?s Law Center(RMCLC)?: The RMCLC was founded in 1981 to address the lack of quality legal representation for abused and neglected children in Colorado. Without effective legal advocacy, these children were drifting in foster care for years on end, not receiving the physical and mental health care they needed, and often subjected to dangerous living conditions.
We are appointed by the court to protect the best interests of our child clients, most of whom have been removed from abusive homes. We go beyond typical legal advocacy to guarantee our child clients? lives are safe and stable by ensuring they are not in state care for more than a year, unnecessarily moved from one home to another, separated from their siblings, denied crucial mental health treatment or forced out of the system without anyone to rely on as they transitioned to adulthood.
In its 29 years, the Children?s Law Center has:
Saved the lives of 9,526 children
Provided resources to more than 29,743 crisis callers
Recruited 1,030 volunteer attorneys to advocate for children
Achieved dramatic systemic reform through four dozen public policy initiatives
Trained and empowered 3,840 foster parents to advocate for their foster children
Provides Birthday Presents to Children in Foster Care via the "Birthday Buddies" program
What is Birthday Buddies? Birthday Buddies is something that is very near and dear to my heart because of what it does; and, that it was the idea of my best friend Amber Whaley and Nicole Slizeski. Birthday Buddies is run a part of the Rocky Mountain Children?s Law Center which is located here in Denver. There are over 12,000 children in foster care in Colorado alone. There is no one to assure that children in foster care receive a gift on their birthday or have a birthday party. Many of these children are frequently moved between multiple foster care homes and/or group homes. So a birthday present and recognition that is your birthday is something that most of us take for granted; but, this is something very special to these children. Birthday Buddies volunteers ensure that every foster child served by the Children?s Law Center will celebrate his or her special birthday.
If you can?t make it to the event, but would like to getting by either providing a birthday present for a child in foster, making a donation or volunteer to help this amazing cause and organization, please visit the website or contact me directly.
