The Evolution of a Widget

When asked if he would like to design the next generation widget for UserVoice, John thought it would be accomplished in a couple of weeks (maybe months). Fast forward almost a year later and UserVoice is almost ready to launch the Touchpoint Toolkit. It's been a year entirely consumed by the design of a single widget. At times it seems like John's entire design life has been confined to a 300x300 pixel box. This has been both challenging and rewarding.

Join us as we explore the life and times of a feedback and support widget. John will talk about the design process, explore early mockups and prototypes, discuss UX decisions, and review the feedback received during the beta process.

UserVoice is a feedback and support company based in San Francisco with an office here in Raleigh.

John Long is a UX Designer at UserVoice and is fanatical about code and design. He's the creator of Radiant CMS and Serve. John writes about CSS & Sass for The Sass Way.

I was surprised and delighted to know which chess ranking algorithm you guys were using without having to ask. :P

It was really nice to see a complete redesign process lining closely to the lean UX method. Can't wait to install the new widget! Thanks Josh and John for coming out.

Stepped outside of my norm on this one, which is a good thing. It'd good to grow. I enjoyed seeing the large plotted pathways of interaction, and can see how I could be applying that in my own work.

Very informative and enlightening to see the thought process and hear the trials and tribulations of creating something that could be seen as simple

Very good presentation. Next time I'll try not to stumble in embarrassingly late!
