GROUP RULES & FAQ
What is the meaning of the term "Desi"?
'Desi" refers to someone who is from India or the Indian subcontinent. This term comes from the word Desh/Des from the Hindi language meaning country or homeland. The term originally has historical roots from the Sanskrit word "Deshah," which also means country or homeland.
You must be 18 yrs or older to join this group and attend our meetups. Membership to DesiTunes is primarily targeted for musicians in Los Angeles interested in performing music from the Indian sub continent.
To attend our events as Guest (non-Performer), pls visit http://tickets.desitu...
to RSVP & purchase tickets/pay cover charges for event admission. Follow our Facebook Page
to stay informed about the activities of this group.
Our goal is to network Desi/Non Desi musicians in Los Angeles and to offer opportunities for individual & group performances, discussions etc during our meetups and events. If you are a new member you must attend the very first meetup after you join to confirm/retain your membership. Members are expected and encouraged to actively participate by attending events organized by DesiTunes.
Upon sign up, each new member will be on 14 days free Trial period. Members on Trial period may attend & perform by paying the cover charges. Once the 14 days free trial period expires, members may continue by signing up for Pro membership failing which Meetup. com will remove any unpaid members from this group. To avoid this, new members interested in continuing the membership are encouraged to pay membership dues before their 14 days free trial period expires.
Membership due $5/month is charged via credit card after the 14 days free trial period. All payments including membership dues & cover charges once paid are non refundable.
Payments are processed via meetup.com and leadership team has no control over the retention of unpaid members. We highly recommend opting in for 'Automatic Payment' to avoid any unexpected discontinuance of membership dues.
Requirements to perform during our meetups:
DesiTunes is focused on promoting music from the Indian subcontinent. Members must limit their on stage performance to Singing AND/OR Playing a Musical Instrument. Plan the performances accordingly by selecting songs in the languages from Indian Subcontinent. Members may perform unplugged, with Karaoke or Live musical instruments. Performance opportunities are strictly reserved for members of this group.
Due to the nature of our meetups and venue restrictions, members are discouraged from bringing children under 12 years to our events.
Bi-monthly meetup sessions typically run for 4 - 5 hours including setup & breaks in between. A setlist of 30 songs will be maintained for each meet. There will be a 'Theme' for each meet and a dedicated segment with 10-15 songs where interested members may perform strictly based on the theme. All other performances will follow after the themed segment. Theme Segments are defined to encourage collaboration, honor musical legends, pay tribute to the stalwarts of desi music or based on random concepts. Though there may be a theme for each event, members may perform songs of their choice once the theme segment is completed. This provides fair opportunity for each member to fully participate in our events. Additionally there may be an Open segment where interested members may perform additional songs strictly based on available time.
If you are a new member performing for the first time with us, take a moment to introduce yourself before your performance. We strive to provide performance opportunities for all participating members within the limited time by encouraging collaborative performances. We hope you appreciate the intention & effort and help us create fair opportunities for everyone to perform.
All Performances except Open Mic Segment will be based on a Setlist. As soon as the announcement is made, members can post their song selections in the "comments" section of the announcement. Leadership Team will consolidate the songs & publish a setlist for the event. Leadership team may change the order of the songs to make sure all participating members get at least one opportunity to perform before the second chance. This helps to avoid song repetitions and provide a fair performance opportunity to every member of this group. Setlist will be closed when we receive 30 song submissions OR 24hrs prior to the scheduled time of the meet, whichever is earlier.
Please note, Guests accompanying the RSVP'd members are discouraged from performing during our meetups to provide a fair opportunity for existing members.
If guests are interested in performing, they are encouraged to sign up for membership to perform in future meets.
Members who wish to perform with karaoke are encouraged to use only high quality tracks. Poor quality tracks spoils listening pleasure when amplified. Once the meetup announcement is made, members may email the track in MP3 format to "firstname.lastname@example.org" before we close the setlist (24hrs prior to the scheduled time of the meet)
Alternately, you may also connect your Smart Phones to our sound system to play the karaoke tracks (Pls refrain from using USB's & CD's) WiFi access may not be available at all venues, members are expected to have their karaoke tracks accessible offline.
In case of live performances with musical instruments, members must bring required cables/adapters to connect to the sound system. Members are expected to inform the Leadership Team ahead if there are any specific audio requirements
Meetup participation rules:
Members are expected to RSVP when the organizers announce an event. RSVP 'Yes' only if you are committed to attending an event. A 'Yes' RSVP should be treated like any other commitment you would make. If you respond Yes and then you change your mind, please change your RSVP accordingly at the earliest or within 24hrs of the event.
We usually plan the meetups in restaurants or venues with limited/ maximum allowable number of attendees, do not RSVP 'Yes' and take the available spots unless you are committed to attend.
Members are encouraged to meet the Organizers while attending an event so we know who is in our group. Take a moment to get to know other artists and their work. This group is aimed at networking artists who share a common bond for Indian music.
