Learn Zim: The Free Replacement for Evernote and Solution to Chaos in Your Life

Notes

Akamai has generously agreed to provide space and 'free as in food' for this meeting. Thank you to our sponsor! http://www.akamai.com/

Meeting Description

Zim (http://zim-wiki.org) is a desktop wiki and a wonderful piece of free software that competes well with proprietary alternatives like Evernote.

As we get ready to head into 2014, why not use Zim to bring some order to our lives? Zim can be used as a topic-based notebook, organizer, document editor, journal, collection manager, and more.

We're fortunate to have Brendan Kidwell as our speaker.  Brendan will start his talk with an introduction to Zim, followed by an overview of use cases, with a series of short demos about solving particular problems like:

• task tracking

• diary

• drafting a paper

• making a web site

• syncing notebooks across computers

• etc.

Based on audience interest, Brendan can also answer questions about his experience building a Windows installer for the app and contributing to this free software project.

Transportation & Parking

The Akamai office is a short walk from the Kendall Square T stop and other public transportation.

Metered parking is normally available near our location.

I started using Zim last night. It looks like it will be "keeper" as soon as I work out how to get it synced via Google Drive.

@Brendan, great job last night! I've been meaning to use Zim more and with all the tips & tricks from last night, I feel equipped to do so.

@Manny + other attendees, sorry for the delay at the beginning of the meeting. I think I'm finally getting the hang of the AV system at Akamai so hopefully next time we'll get the presentation started more quickly.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll try to project more consistently in the future.

Sure, it was delayed by technical issues, and the speaker was barely audible at the start. But, once it got going it was a good presentation, overall.

I am planning to record my talk and I brought a camera and personal voice recorder with me from New York City, but I forgot my tripod! If you can bring your floor or desktop tripod compatible with a standard sized consumer camera please reply here!
