Subject: : Global Warming Beach Rally this Sunday!

Greetings North County!
Here's a reminder that this Sunday, Oct. 26th at 2pm, we'll be joining together in Encinitas at Moonlight Beach one last time before the election to show our candidates for Congress that we want them to commit to strong global warming solutions. We need you there with your passion and your commitment to protecting our North County community from global warming.

While we have heard Brian Bilbray and Nick Leibham mention some global warming solutions, we are still waiting for strong public commitments that demonstrate they are devoted to doing what is necessary to avoid the worst impacts of global warming. That's why it's so important that you join us this Sunday!

We'll delighted to have groups like Surfrider, San Diego Kids for Peace, local surf clubs, and more joining us to show the diverse groups in North County that want to see our leaders be global warming champions. We hope you can make it!

WHEN: Sunday October 26th, 2pm

WHERE: Moonlight Beach, Encinitas

(head towards the coast from the Encinitas Blvd. exit of the 5, take a left on S. Coast Hwy 101, right on W. D St, right on Moonlight Lane. You can park in the lot at C Street and Moonlight Lane; or street parking)

And, if you haven't already, please help us by clicking here and sending messages to Brian Bilbray and Nick Leibham asking them for their leadership on global warming. Then, forward this onto your friends and family!

See you at the beach!

On Monday afternoon, October 27, the San Diego City Council will take a position on Proposition 8.
Prop 8's supporters have already put out the call for their people to attend. San Diego City Hall
202 C Street, San Diego, 92101

Please plan to arrive by 1:30. Arrangements have already been made for brief presentations by both sides, so we don't need speakers, but we do need to have the strongest possible presence in the Council Chambers.

If you cannot attend, please send an email urging your Councilmember to oppose Prop 8.

*** 5.) From Martha Sullivan: "A Question of Power", hard-hitting documentary on the so-called

**** "Sunrise Powerlink" Project ****

Subject: The Time is NOW to Flood the Governor, CPUC and BLM -- watch this locally-produced Documentary on Sunrise Powerlink

Last Sunday, "A Question of Power", the one-hour documentary locally produced about SDG&E/Sempra's proposed Sunrise Powerlink boondoggle, was successfully premiered at the Stone Brewing Company in Escondido (appropriate, given its rooftop solar panels). I was there and enjoyed this hard-hitting documentary on the so-called "Sunrise Powerlink" project -- winced a bit at my short appearance, reflecting on why we are understandably cynical about utilities' and regulators' motives and judgment in the wake of the electricity deregulation fiasco of 2000-2002.

The documentary takes a hard look at SDG&E's claims regarding this line and the sustainable alternatives that could be San Diego's energy future if this line is defeated.

In addition to many local grassroots activists and experts, some local luminaries are featured, including Donna Frye (who winds up the video with her admiration for the grassroots organizing done to oppose this bad idea), Mike Aguirre (San Diego City Attorney who is suing SDG&E for its negligence resulting in fires, and a tremendous advocate for renewable energy generation right here in San Diego, not Imperial County), and Dianne Jacob (SD County Supervisor who has very ably voiced her constituents' opposition to the Sunrise Powerlink in ANY form).

I am pleased to let you know that the documentary is online at:

The CA Public Utilities Commission (CPUC - where I worked for about 20 years) will be deciding in the next several weeks whether California's ratepayers will pay the heavy price in the decades to come for this outmoded and destructive technology. We must get the word out with this video NOW - TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE. We have now a generous donation for mailing out of the documentary DVD. If you want a complimentary copy of "A Question of Power", please email Donna Tisdale your postal address. Donna's email is: <[address removed]>

Requests for the DVD will be handled on a first come, first serve basis. Supplies are limited. Copies will be mailed out in the next two weeks. Once you have a copy, organize a viewing in your community. If you do, let Diane Conklin, co-producer, know when and where these will take place and she will email you an ACTION Flyer (similar to the following info) now being prepared for distribution at locally organized: viewings: [address removed]

THANK YOU for your consideration and please pass this on! The grassroots opposition to this foolhardy, wasteful project which started in a Julian living room almost 3 years ago (as part of Jeeni Criscenzo's congressional campaign) has truly blossomed into a county-wide coalition of a wide range of interests who all agree that we can meet our energy needs SMARTER than the Sunrise Powerlink.

Martha Sullivan

1. Contact Governor Schwarzenegger Immediately. Schwarzenegger has come out for this line and four of the five California Public Utility Commissioners (CPUC) are his appointees. The Governor must feel the heat from folks like you who don?t want this project. Call him today and follow up with an email. Let him know YOU expect better solutions from him!

2. Contact CPUC Commissioners.

The CPUC will be deciding on the Sunrise Powerlink Project any time after October 24, 2008.

Each of the five Commissioners may draft an Alternate Decision presenting differing conclusions or opinions. All five Commissioners will then vote on the Proposed Decision and any Alternate Decisions at a meeting of the full Commission before the end of the year. Let them know you have contacted the Governor and tell them to listen to YOU and why you don't want this project.

3. U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Record of Decision (ROD). The Final EIR/EIS and Proposed Land Use Plan Amendment are available for review/comment until November 15, 2008 (see link below). The BLM has selected the southern Sunrise Powerlink transmission route as their preferred project. They need to amend the just revised Eastern San Diego County Resource Management Plan (RMP) to accommodate a new utility corridor for Sunrise--where none currently exists. The ROD for the RMP, just released Oct 10th, approved the downgrading of the proposed utility route area from a Visual Resource Management Class II down to the lowest Class IV, allowing both Industrial wind turbines (400 - 500 feet tall) and new transmission lines where they were not allowed previously. The record shows that a foreign corporation, Iberdrola Renewables, was behind the significant land use changes. The process is purposely being piecemealed. At a minimum, the new ROD cannot be issued until this review period has lapsed. The decision of the BLM Director is the final decision of the Department of the Interior, so make your opinion known! Register your opposition to approval of the Sunrise Powerlink and the amended BLM land use plan via e-mail, fax and/or postal mail:

***8.) . From Jess Durfee ***:

There's a lot we can do in the next 16 days to help elect the candidates we believe in, from Barack Obama down to every good Democrat who has stepped up to run for local office.

I'd like you to know about our new web portal:

This comprehensive site was built by local volunteers committed to supporting the Democratic slate in San Diego County. It features inspiring video, ways to volunteer, a list of our endorsed candidates, helpful links, and more.

Tomorrow is the deadline for registration, and our County Party will be signing up voters and hand-delivering forms to the Registrar until their doors close Monday night. Please call us if you need help with registration or if you're able to volunteer: (858) 277-3367.

We have been working all year to ensure that San Diego County votes a Democrat into the White House along with a wave of Democratic leaders at the state and local level, and I know we're closer than ever. Every door knock and phone call -- every bit of support -- helps us get there. I hope you'll be part of the change we need:

Please share this message with your family and friends!

Yours in Victory,

*** INFO "YOU" NEED TO SEE ! ***

Here is a video of our young vets being arrested and told "they have no rights!"

Here is a profile of Van Jones. We met him this year at the media conference and were able to speak with him afterward. He is a friend of Barack Obama and said that he is what we believe him to be and that it is up to us to tell him what we want and need. Obama, that is. These are the ancillary things that make me feel okay with Obama in spite of my feel of betrayal on FISA and the war.

On a personal note, thanks to the very fast work of some great friends, I will be able to make the trip to AZ, replace stolen merchandise and begin to get all the papers we need to keep our lives in order. The police doubt my car, purse and other things will ever be recovered as they believe them to be in MX based on where my credit cards were used. Thank goodness I've managed to keep my old Ford Explorer on the road. On my way to Discount Tire this am for tire and brake in spection.

Mccain and Palin and their ilk don't laugh. They patronize. They don't smile, they snicker. They don't debate, they denigrate. They don't talk, they condescend. They don't argue, they ridicule. There is a nastiness, a mean-spiritedness, a smug certitude, and a profound and baseless arrogance seething from both of them.

Subject: ObamaSD News 10/21/2008 Date: Tuesday, October 21,[masked]:50 PM

Dear Obama Supporter,

Our phenomenal candidate was the draw last week for the largest political rally in U.S. history: 100,000 people in St. Louis turned out to cheer Barack Obama! A couple of days prior to that, rock and pop icons Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel joined forces in New York to raise money for Barack!

Our calls to voters in a range of swing states like Montana, Colorado, and North Carolina show great support, among even red state voters. Time to sit back and enjoy the ride to an Obama victory, right?

Barack himself warned supporters at the concert in New York: not to get overconfident because he leads in the polls.: "Don't underestimate the capacity of Democrats to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Don't underestimate our ability to screw it up. I want everybody running scared." So come out and join us, as we all ?run scared? of losing!

Precinct Leaders may choose to go door-to-door, make phone calls or host house parties in an effort to identify supporters, persuade the undecided and make sure people get their ballots mailed or get to the polls. Training and supplies will be provided. If you were a Precinct Captain for Obama in the primary, we highly encourage you to join the GO Team. Thanks to the herculean efforts of the San Diego County Democratic Party Voter Registration Team, the GOP advantage within SD County has dropped from 77,000 to 17,000 since last January!!

*The Voter Reg Team has registered 11,840 people to vote this year and 28,540 people since we began in 2004.

*The deadline for registering for this year's presidential election has just passed, so now we urge everyone to turn their attention to Getting Out the VOTE!!

*Thanks again for an astounding effort!

*Travel To Las Vegas
Help elect Barack Obama by traveling to Las Vegas to volunteer. We still need lots of volunteers to travel to Las Vegas between now and Election Day. Our lead in Nevada in the polls is only a few percentage points! We CANNOT win in Nevada without the support of our volunteers. The McCain/Palin strategy to come from behind and win this election absolutely must include winning the state of Nevada. We can stop them in their tracks in Las Vegas!

Did you know that, by contributing to the Obama campaign via our San Diego Fundraising Page, you help supply signs, buttons and bumper stickers to crucial swing states like Nevada and Ohio, as well as our own San Diego? Via an agreement with Chicago, the fundraising page turns our local donations into tons of Obama signs, buttons, bumper stickers and other items, which go to important states that haven?t been able to muster enough financial resources to buy their own.
If you don't have time to phone bank to Nevada and you can't travel there to help, DONATE to our page and send them Obama gear!

We are also asking business and frequent travelers and airline, Marriott and Avis employees to help by working with their associates to gather buddy passes, discounts, awards and certificates to support this effort. Together YES WE CAN in Florida too, and win the Election early in the night with their 27 electoral college votes. Send or drop by gift cards to the La Jolla Democratic Club HQ at 817 Silverado, La Jolla, CA 92037.

***11.) . From Martha Sullivan***

Finally heard that there's a link up to the internet radio interview I did 2 months ago with the SD Union-Tribune Op-Ed Page Editor about energy policy in California:

Scroll down to the listing for Martha Sullivan on August 21st. I learned of this being posted when contacted recently by the Op-Ed Page Editor about my op-ed piece on CA energy policy which I submitted 2 months ago, and hopefully will run soon, after being pushed aside by all the economic and political turmoil of the past 2 months.

Stay tuned! OH and by the way, if you haven't already voted, my hearty recommendation is NO on CA Props 7 and 10 -- joined by many environmental and progressive organizations including the Sierra Club and the CA Democratic Party. They may be well-intentioned but they are very poorly-written and will actually set the cause of clean, renewable energy BACKwards.

*** 12.) From Kim *** What to say or write to your Republican Family Members & Friends**

Subject: To my Republican friends and family-members (and cc'ed to all),

Something has happened recently, and I hope to hear from you on this particular issue... representatives of the Republican Party are calling Democrats and Barack Obama unAmerican, and even Socialists, traitors, and supporters of terrorism.

FYI, I am no longer a registered Democrat, but I am a liberal. And over the years it has become increasingly common to assert that even we liberals are America-haters.

But you know me, don't you? I hope so. I love and believe in this country's ideals and the very foundation upon which it is based. It is not right to claim those of us who believe there is a place in government for a degree of liberalism are traitors and/or un-American. And it is disturbing to hear Congressional members labeled unpatriotic simply because they are Democrats, or a decent Christian man running for president, who clearly is dedicated to the ideals of this country, called a traitor. We have Republican representatives, right-wing pundits, and the McCain/Palin ticket itself to thank for the new all-time lows in this regard, and the effect on America is devastating. The time to put a stop to such divisiveness is long overdue.

Colin Powell said some incredible things on this very subject this morning on Meet The Press, when he was endorsing Barack Obama. You may be disappointed with his endorsement, but at the very least, please check out his comments around the 4:30 mark of this video (below). He moved me to tears with these bravely spoken words. If America is to remain strong, if we are to continue shining the light of democracy and freedom, the majority of Americans (conservatives and liberals alike) must stand along with him and say, "Enough!"

What do you think of the Riverside Press-Enterprise?

Denise sent this message to members of the group Democracy for Riverside

With endorsements rolling out that many feel are not representative of the changing views of the community, and another wave of layoffs decimating their staff, many in Riverside are talking again about the increasingly pathetic state of journalism, or lack of it, at the Press-Enterprise. What do you think?

I've posted a poll on our Democracy for Riverside page to throw the question out, what do you think of the Press-Enterprise? Do you think it's just fine? Do you think it's gone to the dogs, or the elephants, as the case may be? Are you disgusted and ready to cancel your subscription? Give us your opinion here:

Poll: Had Enough of the Riverside Press-Enterprise?
The poll will run until midnight on Friday, October 24. Send this on to your friends and family in and around Riverside, so they can let us know what they think, too.
