Obama San Diego Newsletter * October 27, 2008 * ONE WEEK LEFT. SEVEN DAYS.

Dear Obama Supporter,

As you all know, these are the days that count more than any others. We need you to call volunteers to come out and phonebank to swing states this weekend and Monday and Tuesday. We need you to get our own people out to vote for Barack and for local Democratic candidates.

As you summon all of your remaining energy to propel Barack Obama into the White House, here is a little inspiration from an American in Norway. Her story is a powerful testament to Barack's true character, as it occurred long before he was running for office and when no one was looking.

Twenty years ago, Mary Andersen stood at a Miami airport check-in counter, despairing of being able to pay the $100 surcharge needed to bring her possessions to her new married life in Norway. As tears flowed, she heard a "gentle and friendly voice" behind her saying, "That's okay, I'll pay for her." She still remembers the authority that radiated from him.

Fresh from poorly-paid community organizing and off to Harvard, Barack Obama paid for Mary's suitcases. She repaid him upon her arrival, has already voted for him and contributed another $100 to the campaign. "He was my knight in shining armor," she told the newspaper VG, with a smile. How long has it been since we had a president with that on his resume?! Ever? To the barricades! All for one and one for all!

Join the CA Phone Bank Tsunami!

This past weekend, thousands of California Obamaniacs made approximately 1.2 million calls to Ohio, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico and Colorado!

Incredible, yes, but they are targeting EVEN MORE for November 1 through 4, Election Day. Phonebanks during the week will be dedicated to recruiting volunteers for the final push, while the last four days will focus on swing states. Over the weekend, we will be starting even earlier, from 7am!

If you have never phone banked before, don't worry, our new volunteer deputy field organizers will be on hand to train you. Bring your cell phones, chargers and your best smile and let's turn this whole country blue!

An urgent message from Steve Hildebrand, deputy national campaign director for Obama for America, is asking everyone willing to WORK on GOTV (no lounge lizards or sunbathers, please) in Florida to get there any way you can: NOW.

"I?ve been down in Miami for about four weeks helping put together our final push for getting out the vote. Early voting started 8 days ago and we feel like we have a slight early advantage ? but things are urgent. Polls for the last couple of weeks have given us a small lead of 4-5 points. If we are successful in getting out the massive numbers of voters that live here in Florida, Barack will win this state and make history."

Specifically, the campaign is targeting the following groups:
600,000 African Americans who were registered to vote in 2004 who did not vote;
900,000 registered voters under the age of 35 who did not vote in 2004;
400,000 Hispanics who were registered but didn?t vote in 2004.
900,000 newly registered voters in the state.
Faith Outreach on Sunday to African American and Hispanic churches, as well as progressive denominations like Episcopal, United Church of Christ, etc.

They need attorneys for voter protection, people comfortable with inner city GOTV, logistics experts and Spanish and Creole-speakers. In short, they need HELP!

When: NOW
Where: Florida!
RSVP: If you have an interest in coming to Florida, email [address removed]

Please understand the campaign does not pay for travel or housing ? sadly ? so that we have the resources for voter contact and GOTV ? so people need to make a bit of a sacrifice if we are going to win. We also need people in all parts of the state. If you can come, please be flexible as to where we place you. And to clarify, federal lobbyists can volunteer for our campaign ? the prohibition is on raising or giving contributions.

GOTV is everything now. If you would like to provide rides to the polls or do poll checking or GOTV phoning for local democratic candidates, please contact Courtney at San Diego Democratic HQ.
RSVP: For more information please contact Cortney at[masked], or [address removed]

Sat 11/01/2008 Moms for Obama National Rally Day!

On November 1 at 12:00 pm PST, San Diego Area mothers and their partners, children, parents and friends will participate in a festive family picnic and rally in Spanish Landing Park.

On the same day, at the same hour nationwide, mothers and their children all over America will join hands and hearts to take a stand for the future of this great nation.

The San Diego event will serve as Southern California's location for the National Rally. It is expected to bring together families from across Southern California to enjoy an afternoon of speakers, entertainment, activities for children and meet others who are excited to elect Barack Obama as the next President of the United States.

Participants are encouraged to wear their Obama gear and bring their own creative signs to the event. In addition, if you are an owner of a boat or kayak, please feel free to cruise by, as we will be right off the water.

When: Saturday, November 1, 12p-2p
Where: Spanish Landing Park

Tue 11/04/2008 Join a Great San Diego Political Tradition!

For decades now, every Election Night in San Diego draws all candidates and their supporters, regardless of party, to Golden Hall to mingle with other politicos, all under the glare of the local media kleig lights! It is a political spectacle and ambience not to be missed! When a race is called for a candidate, supporters launch a raucous victory lap!

More details to come in a couple of days, but be prepared to don your Obama gear, grab your signs (or make them!), your buttons and noisemakers and meet us in the plaza outside the Hall.

If we have won, we will take our victory lap and party. If it's not over, we will regroup nearby and phone voters until it is!

Where: Golden Hall, 202 C Street, San Diego, CA 92101 (at 3rd & B Sts)

The Music Just Keeps on Comin'...

Here's a new one, especially for "swing" voters! Will Galison and his orchestra perform "We're takin' it back, with Barack, Jack," a fabulous swing tune with poetic lyrics and our kind of message! Choo-choo...change!

Having checked it out for ourselves, we're going to give another plug for Scott Riggs' Obama Radio. If you missed it last week, Obama Radio gives listeners a unique insight into the Senator's musical tastes, featuring Barack's
personal song picks, tracks from his favorite artists and music played
at Obama events. Hear it all, at:

And if you missed these:
A terrific Cuban son piece by an unidentified New York artist, on the streets of New York, accompanied in dance, singing and smiling by a cast of locals!

MC Yogi's catchy hip-hop lyrics and great graphics make for an inspiring few minutes!

Congratulations, Walk for Obama!

Just a quick shout-out to Deborah Gostin for her hard work organizing an extremely successful Walk for Obama on October 26.
