East Bay "Democracy for America" Meetup Message Board › SATURDAY: Dolores Huerta & Barbara Lee

SATURDAY: Dolores Huerta & Barbara Lee

Eden J.
"The only way to preserve our democracy...
... is to participate in it."

--- Howard Dean, speaking in Hayward last Sunday

If you've got a few hours to spend on social justice this Saturday, please seriously consider coming to two special events for the special election with Dolores Huerta and Barbara Lee.

Details on both events are below. Scroll to the bottom of this message if you only have a few minutes to read this.

First, a note from Sharon Maldonado, who sent a personal message today encouraging friends in our community to come and meet Dolores Huerta on Saturday at 1 pm in downtown Berkeley... and then take action.

Dear friend,

I know you've received the spirited announcement which Karen and Janet wrote and distributed, inviting you to join us Saturday in welcoming Dolores Huerta to our campaign office.

I decided to send a personal note as well. Because Dolores is so committed to grassroots action, and people-to-people campaigning, she has added our visit to her busy schedule this weekend. (Among many other things, she's being interviewed by Amy Goodman Saturday night.) She both wanted to meet East Bay activists and to share some of her campaign experiences and wisdom with us. I hope many people will decide to join us on Saturday; this is last minute, and therefore difficult to publicize fully.

Dolores was one of my first bosses--my supervisor when I coordinated the Berkeley Grape Boycott in the late sixties. Those of us lucky enough to work with her were awestruck not only by her reputation, her unbelievable and indefatigable energy, but also (and most strongly) by the great respect she paid each of us novices. She was an incredible font of wisdom, yet down to earth and a person of great warmth.

Please join us on Saturday. Hopefully, you can come at 9:30 and walk a morning precinct for a few hours and return at 1pm to hear Dolores. If you can't make it that early, come at 1pm. The office will stay open, so folks can walk in the afternoon, or sign up for an activity (phoning, etc.) during the week. We still have thousands of voters to reach. Turn-out is everything in defeating Arnold and the East Bay has a key role to play in this election.

Hope to see you tomorrow, and si se puede!

Sharon Maldonado

Come hear Dolores Huerta Saturday, October 22nd at 1:00 pm

We are very pleased and excited to announce that Dolores Huerta is coming to talk to us at the BAE Headquarters this Saturday! (Everybody is welcome to attend - lunch included for all morning precinct walkers!)

Dolores Huerta is co-founder of the United Farm Workers, a major civil rights champion, founder of the Dolores Huerta Foundation (leading grassroots organizing throughout California), a tough negotiator, a strong leader, a feminist and a passionate, articulate opponent of Proposition 73. She has set aside time in a very busy Bay Area visit just to greet and speak to BAE Special Election volunteers returning from this Saturday morning's precinct walk.

Ms. Huerta knows precinct work inside out, and knows it is at the heart of grassroots organizing. She was inspirational at the Reno Precinct Campaign kick-off last year, and it will be great to welcome her back to Berkeley. And, on this special Saturday, we'll keep the office open until 5 pm for those who want to check out a precinct in the afternoon.
