TODAY: Tell Sacramento to Support Clean Money

Eden J.
Hi Oakland DFA Meetuppers -

We had a great Meetup on Friday night, contributing over 30 folks and more than $750 to the California Clean Money campaign.

Inspired by guest speakers Assemblywoman Loni Hancock, Susan Lerner, and Meg Burton-Cahill, several DFA'ers are traveling to Sacramento on Tuesday to lobby for Clean Money reform. Can you come as well? (See info at the bottom of this message)

If not, please take literally *2* minutes of your time TODAY (no later than 1:30 Tuesday afternoon) and call Assemblymembers Nunez and Umberg to simply say:

"I'm calling to ask that you please vote YES on AB 583, the Clean Money bill."

Even if you call after hours tonight, please leave a message.

Please also call our East Bay Senator -- Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata -- at (916) 651-4009 or (510) 286-1333 and let him know you support Clean Money. Perata, as Senate President Pro Tem, has NOT taken a position on the Clean Money bill.

As Trent Lange notes below, the committee vote tomorrow will likely be very close. Given the ramifications of Clean Money on issues we all care about ("the reform that makes other reforms possible"), this may be one of the most important calls you ever make to Sacramento.

See the California Clean Money call to action below, with phone numbers and other info...

Subject: AB 583 Vote Tomorrow: Call Now!

Assemblymember Loni Hancock's AB 583, the California Clean Money and Fair Elections Act, is up for its crucial vote in the Assembly Elections Committee on Tuesday (Jan 10th) at 1:30pm. After the outrageous spending in the special election and the recent wave of campaign finance scandals, it's obvious that something dramatic needs to be done to change the way we finance election campaigns. This is it.

AB 583 sets up a system of full public funding of campaigns for state offices so that candidates have an alternative to chasing big money contributions. It will let voters take control of politics in California as it has already in Arizona and Maine.

The vote is going to be close. We especially need you to make one phone call, to Assemblymember Tom Umberg, the chair of the Elections Committee.

All you have to do say "I'm calling to ask that Assemblymember Umberg vote yes on AB 583, the Clean Money bill." It will just take a minute! If you're reading this before Tuesday at 1:30, call him at:

Assemblymember Tom Umberg
(916) 319-2069 or (714) 939-8469
Fax: (916) 319-2169

Once you've made that call, it would also help to call Speaker Fabian Nunez's office and also say that you're calling to ask him to strongly support AB 583, the Clean Money bill. Call him even if it's after Tuesday at 1:30.

Speaker Fabian Nunez
(916) 319-2046 or (213) 620-4646
Fax: (916) 319-2146

If you live in the San Diego area: Call Assemblymember Mark Wyland at 916-319-2074.

If you live in the Fresno area: Call Assemblymember Michael Villines at 916-319-2029.

Letters and faxes are also extremely powerful ways to get your message across. Not many people write to their legislators, so the people who do get noticed.

Use the California Clean Money Campaign's easy letter-writing tool, including addresses and talking points, to write to Speaker Nunez and to your own legislator:

Thank you so much for your support of Clean Money. Together we will bring fair elections and accountable government to California!

P.S. We are also looking to pack the Assembly hearing room to show the legislators how strong the demand is for this issue. If you would like to attend, please contact us at Info@CAclean.org or (800) 566-3780 for more details, carpool arrangements, and the day’s agenda. We'll see some of you there!
