Hike/Camp the Appalachian Trail in Virginia! Earn your AT trail name, VA, USA

  • June 28, 2013 · 7:00 PM

"One-fourth of the Appalachian Trail lies in Virginia. It varies from easy hiking to very difficult rock scrambling, from busy National Parks to isolated wilderness areas." Hike/Camp the AT in pieces. Check off sections on your AT trail map as your finish them. We will methodically attempt hikes, trail runs and fastpacking weekend trips in order to accomplish this. Who knows... if we finish VA... then we can hit the other States! No need to take off 3-4 months of your life to do this. We'll split VA into Blue Ridge Parkway South, and Shenandoah National Park North (and pieces in between).

Earn your AT trail name! Tradition says that everybody on the trail gets a name! Ha! We'll start off with some hiking and trail runs in the Peaks of Otter area. So far, we've been meeting (at least) once a month to bag another section. Tentatively, the Last Friday of each month. We will flesh out the details as folks sign up.  So far, we've been working with whomever says they want to go, and synchronizing schedules.

How do we get there without an address. Am I missing something? Also why does the host not leave a cell number on here? I have went to several events where I could not find the venue etc and had to turn around and go home. Please advise

Next weekend's hike we will be leaving on Friday, 21 Jun (noonish from Tidewater), 2013, and returning to Tidewater late Monday, 24 Jun (midnightish?). Marathonish length hilly trail running (just bringing hydration packs w/snacks) Saturday and Sunday. (Car/Camper) "Camping" Friday and Saturday nights in and near the AT trail friendly town of Hot Springs, NC. Backpack 15ish miles Sunday night and Monday morning. We'll be shuttling vehicles so we can figure out a bail-out or bail-in point for you if you like! Doc has work on Monday, so he's bailing Sunday after dinner. Text Larry @ (757)[masked] if interested. p.s., I'd rate the trail runs at a 4 and the backpacking at a 3 on a 1-5 scale of difficulty. 3 being "challenging... But nothing crazy".

Lyndsey, Elizabeth and any others signing up for this weekend's hike, please contact Tom or the page organizer about scheduling a first timer or car camping/hiking trip. The ones that Larry is doing are advanced camping/hiking bordering on being ultra trail runs, that are becoming increasingly far away from VA, and over multiple days. You both should talk to Tom and/or Robin!

Dogs are allowed on the AT, you just have to make sure you pick up after them. This month's AT hike will be an overnighter in TN. Not a trip for new campers/hikers! Be advised that if you go hiking in Bear country that Black Bears and dogs don't always get along and if your dogs molest some cubs, you may be attacked. Doc, myself and another are all ultramarathoners. We'll probably be hiking hard and fast... with backpacks. Not sure if Tom Stanley and Brandy are doing any hikes this weekend but you can contact them and ask. By doing some of their more low key hikes you can prepare yourself and reevaluate your skill set to understand whether or not you are ready for a bigger challenge and to undertake one of our more extreme hikes like the ones Doc and I are doing on the AT. Even Doc and I are building up to take weeklong and longer AT trips until we finish the entire AT. Need clarification? You can contact me at [masked] or (757)[masked] (text)
