Lightning Talks

Here at ADUG we want to offer a change of pace for our members, and bring exciting new ideas and speakers to the Atlanta Drupal Users Group.

Who are these “Speakers”, you ask?  YOU are!

This month we will be doing "Lightning Talks" where each speaker will have five minutes to present on a topic of your choice. This is similar to the Ignite or Pecha Kucha talk format (short, informational and simple!).

This is a chance for you to bring anything to the table regarding Drupal … ANYTHING ... which can range from development to design, practical use to theory, or business related ideas.  All attendees are welcome to speak!

Wondering "What should I talk about?"  Think outside the box … what problems are you facing right now with your Drupal site?  Are you intrigued with some new Drupal technology you would like to share? Are you having issues as a freelancer?  These are all good things to bring up, as you will be in the company of other Drupal developers who may have the answers.

If you've ever thought about presenting before but didn't have the time to put a long program together (or are shy about public speaking), no worry -- "Lightning Talks"  is for you. It's only 5 minutes!  And your talk could be the inspiration that helps a fellow Drupaler solve a problem, or be acclaimed as the subject for a longer program or DrupalCamp talk in the future.

We will have food sponsored by LEHAN Partners (thanks to our new sponsor, Saundra Ramsey!) and a space sponsored by Matrix Resources.  Thanks as well to our sponsor TRC Professional Solutions for helping with organization and planning!

That sounds great Eric, and definitely fine to use visual aids.

I'll can probably give a talk about performance planning in Drupal (prep for my DC session).

Ahh yes, that's another great reason to do a lightning talk as prep for a longer talk. Also, as we have some talks that generate interest we may want to schedule them later on in the year with a longer time format.

I'd like to talk about using MongoDB with Drupal.

Great topic Bartram. Also, if you RSVP to the list on the right, it will be easy to get the right headcount to order food and refreshments.

MongoDB, I look forward to hearing about that.

I'll be giving a very short primer on Sass (and the main features that make it so sassy!). I have a quick set of slides to go along with the quick presentation, to visualize how Sass converts to CSS. Is that alright to use visual aids?

I have been to several lightning talks with other groups and really enjoy the format. Hopefully we'll have between 10-15 speakers so those in attendance are going to get a smattering of ideas and tools all across the tech spectrum with some emphasis toward Drupal.

It allows veteran speakers to try their hand at really condensing a topic down to a tiny format while people that have never spoken can easily knock out a 5 minute topic.

I've seen huge topics like how to plan out a new website design with a client down to a simple strange bug in jQuery tackled. Literally if you have read an interesting blog article lately.. you have a lightning talk.

Spread the word and let's have a fast-paced, fun, energetic meeting with lots of ideas flowing back and forth. As we inevitably find talks that have a lot of interest, we'll then know future topics for future meetings in our typical longer form format.

I'll try SEO in 5 min. unless someone else wants it and I'll grab something else.
