Once a month Griffith Observatory hosts public "Star Parties" with the assistance of the Los Angeles Astronomical Society and the Los Angeles Sidewalk Astronomers from 2:00 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. "They are a chance for the whole family to look at the sun, moon, visible planets, nebulae, globular clusters and other objects, to try out a variety of telescopes, and to talk to knowledgeable amateur astronomers about the sky and their equipment."
What we're going to do is combine this with a dinner hike to Mt. Hollywood!
We'll meet at the Greek Theatre parking lot on N. Vermont Ave. at 5pm and take a short hike up to the observatory where we'll spend a few minutes checking out the setting sun, the views, and bathroom breaks for those that need it. :) Then we'll continue on up to Mt Hollywood where we'll have dinner and enjoy the amazing views of the City of Angels from one of the highest points in Griffith Park. On the way back down we'll stop at the observatory again and check out the cool views of planets, moons, nebulas, and other cool astronomical stuff through the telescopes.
I wouldn't call this a beginner hike, but if you can do our normal Sunday/Wednesday hikes then you shouldn't have too much trouble with this one. :)
Bring a picnic dinner, something to drink, and a long sleeve shirt or jacket. Optional accessories include a flashlight (red or green beam preferred), camera, etc. And dogs are welcome.
We'll meet at the parking lot just North of the Greek Theatre on the West side of Vermont Ave. Give yourself a little extra time because there could be extra traffic on Los Feliz Blvd. and Vermont Ave. heading toward the observatory.
I'll send my cell number to those coming a couple of hours before, so if you can't find us or are running a little late you can call and we'll wait a few minutes for you.
See ya there!
Note about dinner: I've found that with the sometimes wildly varying diets people can have, it's generally better to bring your own meals when hiking. That way you'll be sure to have something you like and/or will eat. But anyone who wishes to share is still welcome to! :D
