What makes Scala cool?

Kevin Hester (ex-Google Android @Home) will present our first, and much requested, event on Scala. This is a big deal. Get excited.

What is Scala? "Scala is a general purpose programming language designed to express common programming patterns in a concise, elegant, and type-safe way." Read more about it.

After telling us a bit about what makes scala cool, he's planning a group lab using Scalatra (Rubyists, see Sinatra) to make a little web app.

Scala, widely considered* the last, best hope for humanity**... come find out why.

* by me.
** read: Java programmers.

    btw - I just opensourced a more sizable scalatra app. So if you are looking for a larger example than the little one we did in the talk:

    Also, WIFI is spotty here. So, you should take a look at Kevin's install Gist before coming over if you want to participate (the easy way).

      also Kyle, or (anyone) would you mind downloading the prezi as a 'run locally' version? (only support on mac/windows and I'm currently linux only) - just in case. I can also tether probably...

    We've been assigned the Presentation Room #173, it's the big one on the ground level. If you're looking at the front of the building from the parking lot, proceed to the far left side of the facility.

    Btw - here's the deck I just made. Probably best to not look at it in advance, but it has possibly useful weblinks for afterwards: http://prezi.com/5dsyymea7lfd/what-makes-scala-cool/

    I'm not really a programmer, but this sounds interesting :-).

    For the lab portion of the talk we'll be using Scalatra. To save time during the session, if you could please try to predownload the dependencies. (If you miss this, no big deal - but your laptop will be downloading a fair amount of gunk). The following gist has copy/pastable commands: https://gist.github.com/geeksville/6214944

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.

Henry, started Reno Motorcycle Riders
