Avalanche Training, Climbing Certification, Sea Kayak Training and other skill classifications.

Hello everyone, the early season snow conditions in the mountains are already initiating high level avalanche warnings in many areas. This reiterates the need for our members participating in these types of events to have their own avalanche training.
** please send me an email if you have completed the Ast-1 avalanche safety course **
Ecospirit events are run by volunteer organizers, not guides, and as such do not have the credentials or experience to lead unskilled participants into potentially hazardous terrain.
Our goal as an adventure club is to provide access to a huge variety of events through our adventure calendar so that members can participate and connect with others who share an adventurous spirit. We expect members to be self sufficient on these events and not relying on the organizer for leadership or guide experience. With winter backcountry travel this means that you have at least the basic level of avalanche training before you participate in a winter backcountry event.
I am implementing a members rating system that will allow organizers and participants alike to view which participants have the required prerequisite skills for certain events that require them in conjunction with a list of prerequisites for certain events. This is a work in progress.
Sea Kayak Lvl1:
Every member starts out with a Lvl0 ranking and this ranking is sufficient for the majority of events posted to our calendar at this time. Some trips are more potentially dangerous and will require a higher ranking.
Each of these Lvl1 ranks indicate completion of a level 1 training course for each discipline. I will detail the kayaking and ropes requirements more at a layer date, the winter rank requires completion of AST-1 training course and would then permit you to participate in our winter backcountry trips. Information for training courses for each discipline will be posted. For starters, Canada West Mountain School.
If you have completed the AST-1 course please send me an email and i will then update your membership ranking. Thank you for your understanding, this is a critical safety issue for our members and events.
It is also important to acknowledge that it is completely ok to not have the backcountry skill rating and that there are still many areas we can go play in he snow where this consideration is not a factor. I will detail this more in the future bu for starters consider the North Shore mountains. We will have winter events in these areas that will not require a Winter Lvl1 ranking.
Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.
