The West LA Group (http://sierrawest.us/) of the Sierra Club is extremely pleased to welcome Hillary Gordon, Chair of the Angeles Chapter’s Zero Waste Committee (http://angeles2.sierraclub.org/zero_waste_committee). The Zero Waste Committee promotes the concept of Sustainability, leading the successful efforts to ban single-use plastic bags, promote composting of organic waste and reducing the amount of trash going to landfills. The Zero Waste Committee is part of the “Don’t Waste LA” (http://www.dontwastela.com/) coalition of community, environmental, faith and labor organizations working to increase LA’s recycling and composting.
Thanks to the efforts of Don’t Waste LA, the Los Angeles City Council recently (April, 2014) approved a sweeping transformation (http://switchboard.nrdc.org/blogs/lescalante/la_city_overwhelmingly_support.html) of garbage collection that will help the city meet a goal of keeping 90% of its waste out of landfills. Large apartment complexes and businesses will now be provided with separate containers for recyclables, and food scraps and other compostable waste. Additionally, trash haulers will be required to use “clean fuel” vehicles.
Come learn about how to compost organic waste and make a difference for the environment. This free educational event is sponsored by the West Los Angeles Group of the Sierra Club’s Angeles Chapter. Plenty of free lighted parking. Refreshments are served and there is always a lively talk accompanying the program. Feel free to bring a friend; all meetings are open to members and non-members of the Sierra Club.
