The Des Moines/KC European/Intl Languages Social Club Meetup Pages

Hi Everyone and welcome to Des Moines and KC's longest running european language social club. We began as a small French club on June 30, 1995. We started with a few people invited from a party in mid June for a language professor at UMKC and from there we had a small but fun barbecue get together on the 30th. We then had our first official party in mid July for Bastille Day. So that marks our anniversary date. After that we began getting many members from the Communiversity French group and they would all start inviting their other french, american and international french speaking friends, then their german, italian and other friends, so we just decided to make it an all european language social gathering.

Some of the comments I've received from members is that the parties are very interesting because there are also many multi-lingual persons in our group, and because once you've learned one language and traveled around and met a bunch of interesting people to speak with from those different countries it's hard to stop learning more languages. At the Euroclub parties one can listen in and speak in a French conversation for awhile then in the next corner of the room evesdrop on an Italian or German conversation etc.

The goal is to get together to have a big houseparty every month and that mostly depends on availability of hosts. Whenever we don't have a host for a particular month we'll probably meet at either a public venue or event like the Plaza Art Fair, air shows, concerts or other places, or rent out a clubhouse which we will now set up a fund for. We've also taken quite a few canoe weekends to the Current River near Eminence MO (If anyone still has pictures that exist from that era, I'd love to get them up on the site 'cuz they're some of the most fun times we've ever had as a group.
