Existentialism is a philosophy that addresses how to live in a world without rational anchors. For religious existentialists, churches and sacred books cannot determine man's relationship with God; for atheistic existentialists, man has no essential being but creates himself, and his values, by the choices he makes. We will survey a wide variety of existential writers, beginning with Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, and Dostoevsky in the 19th century and culminating with Heidegger, Sartre, Camus, and Tillich in the 20th century. Fiction will be alternated with non-fiction.
We will discuss Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot. Questions to consider (by no means exhaustive): Why do the characters wait for Godot, why does he never come, and what does he represent? What is the significance of the characters' memory loss? Since Estragon and Vladimir do not particularly like each other, why do they stay together? What function does their friendship serve?
