I've been reading some of the feedback & ratings from recent events. I want formally apologize to the group for a few things went schief recently and also to anyone who has been dissatisfied with any of the recent soccer events.
Cover charges I was informed at 1:00 this afternoon that Tonic was charging a $5 cover charge to see the game today. I normally would have published this in advance, but the bar manager didn't know either as it was the owners decision at the last minute. The reason why bars like cover charges is because they can't stay in business if they don't make money - obviously. Often people come to events and don't buy anything not even one drink. This can come back to bite us sometimes. I often try to book places I think the group will enjoy but can't because they want guarantees of $20 per person.
Some people couldn't find us and several have complained that Tonic is too crowded. I agree. Large Meetup events are unfortunately more impersonal and you have to ask around to find us, but there are Meetup people everywhere so you will find us if you ask around - I think there were about 100 of us today. I gave up printing name tags at events because it costs time and money. Think of it as an adventure, like a scavenger hunt and see if you can find us, you will if you ask some people. On the topic of loud places, Tonic is loud and crowded because there are a lot of Germans in New York. All of the German bars are equally as over crowded. Soccer is Germany's national sport so every place where Germans go will be loud and over crowded. I believe we were the ones making the most noise. Other events like Stammtisch I really try to find quiet places so we can converse. Fu?ball ist eine Ausnahme because it is most important that everyone can see the game. I could book a more private venue but then the short people, like myself, can't see the screen.
Lastly, I do this for free on my own time because I love bringing people together and creating a little bit of Deutsche Stimmung at the same time. As a long-time policy I rarely charge events and don't charge a membership fee. Most of you don't know that it costs Meetup Organizers $140 per year for Meetup, in addition to free time, stress and sometimes extra money out of our own pockets when people don't correctly calculate their portion of the tab at smaller events.
Since all of the German bars are over crowded during world cup season I'm trying to provide an alternative viewing for the group that's relatively easy to get to and inexpensive and that's all I can do. I always try my best at these events to keep things fresh and make everyone feel comfortable and welcome. I hope that if you have one negative Meetup experience that it doesn't turn you off completely. Each event is different and is what you make of it.
Nichts schlimmes gemeint hier wollte nur so erkl?ren.
