EXPERTALKS: May 2014 - Java 8

After much anticipation & fanfare, Java 8 was released in March this year.

The good news?? It definitely evolves the way you code with Java.

At Equal Experts, we have already started working with Java 8 on commercial projects.

In this session, we would like to share our initial experience of working with Java 8.

Through demonstrations of live code and a hands-on workshop, we will explore the exciting new features of Java 8 and how they contribute to making your code cleaner and leaner than ever before... :-)

Participants will solve a simple use case with Java 8 where they get to use its new features. They will also understand how they could approach Java programming in a more evolved way

Apart from live code, we will also be happy to showcase some production code from one of our recent projects.

• Knowledge & experience of Java programming language... :-).

• For the workshop, please get a laptop installed with Java 8 and your favourite IDE. We would recommend IntelliJ Idea Community Edition as it has the best support for Java 8.

Anil Tarte is one of the most tenured members of Equal Experts India. He has successfully led the development & delivery efforts for many of our greenfield projects. His most recent assignment was on Java 8...

    Hi All...

A few of you who could not attend this session have requested for a video / screencast of the same.

While usually we do create screencasts for our Expertalks sessions, this time we feel that there are much more useful videos & screencasts on Java 8 already available on YouTube.

One of the best videos on Java 8 can be found in the Favorites section of the EXPERTALKS YouTube channel.

Thanks for your overwhelming response, here is a solution to the workshop exercise

I would also like to clarify couple of points related to the parallel stream which were raised during the session.

    1. Parallel stream uses ForkJoinPool.commonPool().
That means number of threads equal to the number of available processors, for more details

    2. Parallel stream spawns the intermediate operations in threads.
If one of the intermediate operations throws an exception, the stream stops processing at terminating operation, as it has no control over the other threads.

I would recommend following links, for further exploration:

Workshop was very very good. Anil planned it very well. Doing case study with latest election result was fun.

    Waiting for next workshop :)

Thanks to Anil and all the EE team for organizing workshop.

Is there any chance for people in waiting list

    May 28, 2014

    • Mayank S.

Hi Upendra... seeing that there are many people above you in the Waiting List, it seems difficult that you'll get a chance to attend it... :-(. However, we usually try to create a Screencast of the presentations and put it on our YouTube channel. So don't worry.... Even if u miss this session, you may end up finding it on our YouTube channel... :-)

As every Expertalks session is, this one was even more knowledgeble... The approach taken for the workshop was awesome. Also the problems taken covered all the aspects discussed in the seminar earlier. So this gave a very practical overview of the theory that was covered earlier... I am very excited for the next expertalks.. :)
