As a martial art, it is practiced with as much realism as is feasible. It also means that it is not a passive art like some Asian '-Do' arts, nor a sport like modern boxing, wrestling, or MMA, nor a performance art for the stage, screen, or renfaire, nor a Live Action Role-Playing group (LARP), nor is it an exercise class like Kwando, sword aerobics, or similar classes. It is also more historically accurate and serious than sword-sparring groups like the SCA, and as such we don't have dual-membership with other groups. What we study is the historical reality of combat from that era, backed by science, research with original historical training manuals, and practical experience.
