"Clubmates" is a series about a group of outsiders doing whatever it takes to save their poetry club from disbandment and the hilarity that ensues as personal dysfunction sabotages their attempts to stay together. As the would-be poets prepare for another year, a new member arrives. But their leader, Nadia, becomes preoccupied with the sudden arrival of her ex-boyfriend, a former member. Meanwhile, the clubmates receive some bad news in the form of a red letter.
[NADIA] [GENDER: FEMALE] [AGE: 23-30]
Nadia is a frizzy-haired, sometimes short-tempered IT tech whose only success in life is her title as Poets Club leader. Nadia harbors a strong sense of decorum, and though she might be seen as authoritarian, she genuinely cares about the clubmates and wants everyone to get along. Her only external weakness is Alex, toward whom she has bittersweet feelings.
[ALEX] [GENDER: MALE] [AGE: 23-30]
Alex is an agitator and also works in IT. He is snarky and can dish out the sarcasm, but he can't handle a dose of his own medicine. He is sensitive about his masculinity, which fuels his fragile shell of confidence. He wants back into the Poets Club because his boss at GigoTech gave him a choice: poetry or anger management. His only consolation: bugging Nadia.
[SHAFIQ] [GENDER: MALE] [AGE: 23-30]
Assertive and direct, Shafiq is a no-nonsense kind of guy who often reserves the right to remain silent. He tolerates the shenanigans of his clubmates because they're usually harmless. He's a loner and government worker who wants to belong. In need of a non-work outlet, he's a member of Poets Club due, in large part, to his growing affection for Nadia.
[KRIS] [GENDER: FEMALE] [AGE: 15-17]
(We will take actors who look the part, regardless of actual age.)
Kris is a lovelorn teen whose poetry is full of angst and innocently creepy imagery. She is the quiet kid at the back of the class who chews on her pencil and eats paper. Her thinly veiled crush on Alex is largely ignored by everyone. Starved for attention, she makes Youtube videos of her cats in her free time, when she's not taking care of her shut-in grandmother.
[DREW] [GENDER: FEMALE] [AGE: 18-23]
A benign know-it-all and geeky college student, Drew talked an English professor into substituting class participation for off-site credit via Poets Club. As a former high school Speech and Debate star, Drew was admired, but in college, she is a tiny fish in a big pond. Now doubting her genius, she goes through mood swings highlighted by a hipster-like rejection of all things popular or outbursts of random fact.
[EDGAR] [GENDER: MALE] [AGE: 50-60]
(Must be agile. Stunts foreseeable.)
Edgar is an ex-porn star who likes to write about nubile virgin princesses and perky alien nymphos. He isn't proud of his past, but he won't let anyone beat him to an innuendo. Edgar feels he has something to offer the clubmates by way of wisdom, even if only as a cautionary example. That said, Edgar is an instigator, not afraid of starting a fight for his own amusement.
[CYNTHIA] [GENDER: FEMALE] [AGE: 25-35]
A former child beauty pageant contestant, Cynthia is a site manager for GigoTech and she takes her job seriously, mostly because she likes being in charge and ordering people around. But she also finds purpose in her work. However, she fails to see why Poets Club, should meet in the office. To Cynthia, it seems odd and out-of-order. The later is the worse of both offenses.
