This is a group for people interested in co-creating a new maker lab / hacker space / social enterprise incubator in the old Cotton Mills in Footscray. We meet monthly in Footscray.

The Footscray Maker Lab is a Hackerspace established to provide a place for transformative and commons oriented creative initiatives from many avenues. A place for pioneering new products, services, processes, artistic visions, and social change. In particular we aim to:

  • Engage and support an emerging generation of micro-manufacturing initiatives, open design movement, 3D printing, hobby robotics, custom drones and other DIY garage initiatives.
  • Engage and support an emerging generation of Makers, crafters, metalworking, woodworking, and other pre-industrial production artisans.
  • Engage and support an emerging generation of digital media producers, video, audio and web based.
  • Engage and support an emerging generation of peer to peer service designers and initiators.
  • Draw the above streams together into virtuous systems of enable-ment to support effective micro-enterprise development and sufficiency based commercialisation.

Our social mission is to enable the development of high meaning, high impact, high value innovations with clear social and ecological benefits.

We follows commons oriented commons nurturing approaches that aim to benefit the common good. We aim to fulfill the following specific aspirations:

- To empower migrants from across the Melbourne region, in particular the Western Suburbs, who come to Australia with many talents, knowledge and hope, but who are often locked out of mainstream Australian opportunities, due to an absence of social capital. We aim to build social capital between migrant micro-entrepreneurs, and mainstream business power-bases.

- To empower young people with edge business ideas in developing their business skills and capabilities.

- To empower new Eco-entrepreneurs in developing next generation technologies, products and services, supporting their transitions from ideas to micro-businesses.

- To empower new social entrepreneurs addressing pressing social issues and challenges through innovative service design.

- To develop intergenerational mutual mentoring models where older adults and young people exchange skills e.g. traditional manual skills of older adults and digital l skills of young people.
