Our Annual White Elephant Holiday Party

  • Dec 23, 2012 · 6:00 PM

Happy Holidays to all Foreign Friends! :)

Please make sure that you read the entire invitation here before RSVPing to come!

The dress code: is Holiday Dressy.** Bring a sweater in case it gets chilly so you can be outside on the patio also!**

Activites: We will play the White Elephant game (see below) but participation is optional. (Everyone did last year though, and the years before, if I remember correctly.)  In addition we'll probably play air hockey and maybe some other board games.

Food and drink: This will be potluck, which means that you bring food and drink to share with others.

If you are planning to drink alcohol, which most of us are, please don't forget to bring some! I will be bringing some drinks, but they tend to go quickly.

There is only one courtesy asked by the host and that is that you please bring food without meat (and preferably without dairy)!  Feel free to bring something that is particular to/ or common in/ your country to educate and share with the rest of us!

The location: This will be at a private residence in northwest Houston, close to Beltway 8 and 290.  I will send out the address, as well as my contact information for those who don't have it, to everyone who RSVPs "Yes" two days before the event, so make sure that you have your settings enabled to be able to receive mail from Meetup!

It is important that your RSVP is correct, so PLEASE have enough respect for me and the others to show up if you RSVP and to RSVP if you want to show up!

How you play the White Elephant gift game - this gets very loud and lively!:

  • Each person brings a wrapped gift for around $10. Since you don't know who will receive the gift, I suggest that you buy something that you would really like. You should not be able to tell at all what the gift is on the outside without opening it.
  • When it's time to open the gifts we sit down in a ring and put all the gifts in the middle of the ring.
  • Then the first person picks up and opens a gift.
  • Then the second person can choose to take the first person's gift, if s/he likes it or to open a new gift. If s/he takes the first person's gift, the first person gets to open a new gift or take one of the other persons' gifts.
  • Then the third person chooses to open a new gift or take one of the other people's gifts. And so on... . A gift cannot be taken more than three times (or the game could go on forever).

I'm so glad that you all enjoyed it! :) I was so appreciative of you respecting the food request, of you cooking and bringing delicious vegetarian food! Next time I will have signs for each dish, so you won't have to explain to each person what it is. Thank you all so much for coming and a special thank you to the tree lighters, the candle lighter, the unprompted dishwashers; Juan, Pooya, Jimmy, Marisol an
