F# Special

First speaker announced!

Phillip TrelfordF# for Trading

Effective Trading is about having up-to-date detailed information. Data is acquired from a variety of sources and combined to imply new information. F# is becoming a popular choice for this kind of application. Based on hands on experience of building a Commodity Trading platform I will describe and demonstrate areas where F# gives you leverage like domain modeling, computation and concurrency.

Phil Trelford is a Software Architect and Developer at Trayport, a market leading supplier of energy trading systems. In another life he worked on video games like Halo 3, Jurrassic Park and Powermonger. Phil is a founding member of the F# Foundation and an F# MVP.

I just found the FP-Days website. The meeting is actually on October 24-25th (Thursday and Friday). Problem solved.

Great presentation. Well prepared and comprehensive. I am looking for the data of the F#-days that will take place coming November (?) in Cambridge. Philip Trelford pointed out a web address during his presentation, but I didn't take notes. Can anyone help?

Is there an opportunity to do some hands-on work with Haskell or F#? I managed to get Leksah running on my Mac. Linux Ubuntu gave me tons of dependency problems (I was not the only one who failed). Sounds like an interesting presentation BTW. In everyday life I develop intranet websites (as part of a cms) with SXML (a niche in a cut-throat market).

I can imagine that Leksah is hard to get running, the latest release is more than a year old. But the github repo is somewhat active https://github.com/lek... so it might be easier to get it running from there. Most haskell people tend to use vim/emacs though

I run Ubuntu Linux on my netbook and I have it in my rucksack tonight. I have already installed Emacs on my little machine. Hopefully someone can give me some tips to install Leksah properly for Emacs.

It's also on the same day as ICFP (the Internation Conference on Functional Programming), so I might be in Boston then.

Finally F#, glad to see attention for numerical computing where F# really shines. Actually used F# for capital modelling and stress testing at a large bank where higher order functions and pattern matching really made a difference.

A well-chosen day indeed: right between ICSM and MODELS ;) Hope to make it!
