*****Calgary French Rendez-Vous

From: Kichiji
Sent on: Tuesday, May 6, 2008 7:25 AM
Hello, everyone.

Please read at least as far as the fourth line. Thank you.

In this message:
-Meeting dates and venues.
-We need to increase the accuracy of our RSVPs.

There are three meetings in the near future. The first will take
place TONIGHT, Tuesday, May 6th, at 6:30pm, at Good Earth Cafe, 1502
11th St SW. The second will take place on Wednesday, May 14th, at
7:00pm, at Second Cup in the historic Lancaster Building, 304 - 8th
Av SW. The third will take place on Saturday, May 24th, at 7:30pm,
at Volleydome,[masked]th Av NW.

These are 0, 8, and 18 days from now.

Please go now and RSVP at:

I have no idea why it is called the "the historic Lancaster
Building". I guess I'll have to research that.

Please RSVP as early as possible for the event on May 24th.

Some of us have suggested that we do events where we do other things
while speaking French. Volleyball was something that came up.

We need early and committed "YES"s. If we don't get at least 10
"YES"s I'll have to change the time to 8:30pm so that we can use the
drop-in courts, and as many of us know, I really hate to make
changes to an event once I post it.

Of course, the best reason to go right now and RSVP "YES" for this
event is because it's a great idea for an event. If the rest of us
are as excited as I am about this event, we wouldn't want it to fail
for as silly and ironic a reason as not enough "YES" RSVPs, right?

Speaking of "YES" RSVPs, I mentioned that we have a "temporary" rule
that we will be following until the accuracy of our RSVPs returns to

I put "temporary" and "normal" in quotes because I will define these.

When I first started organising these groups almost four years ago,
I naively thought that "YES" means "YES", and I estimated the
attendance at upcoming events by taking the "YES"s and adding half
of the "MAYBE"s. I quickly discovered that the number this gives is
way too high. Nonetheless, about 91% of the people that RSVP "YES"
do indeed show up at the meetings, and this shows that we sincerely
think we will show when we RSVP "YES". "MAYBE" mostly seems to mean
"NO", but 1 or 2 "MAYBE"s do show up, so in spite of 1 or 2 "YES"s
not showing, I was able to quite successfully use the number of
"YES"s in estimating upcoming attendance.

These numbers apply for the first 2 years that I organised these
groups, and are approximately equal across the four largest groups
that I organise.

However, the last year or so, the accuracy of our RSVPs has
plummeted. We have have several meetings where half the people have
not shown up, and even had meetings where most of the people have
not shown up. I am telling us now that I am not accepting this as
the new normal. Normal means back above 90%.

Temporary is in quotes because following up on people is a lot of
work, and I was hoping to be able to drop the rule after a month or
two. We're going on four months of the rule. It's almost like we
are teasing me. We have a couple of m eetings where everyone shows
up, and I think we'll be able to drop the rule and then we have a
meeting where half the people don't show up, and we're back at
square one.

Let me remind us of the rule. Every person who RSVPs "YES" must do
one of the following four things.

1. Show up at the meeting.
2. Go back to the web site before the meeting and downgrade his or
her reply to "NO" or "MAYBE".
3. Call me on my cellular telephone BEFORE the event.
4. Write me an e-mail message AFTER the event. You don't have to
defend yourself, so it doesn't need to be an excuse. Just tell me
factually what happened even if you merely changed your

Please note that I have talked to or corresponded with other
organisers. I would like to point out what some of the organisers
do. SOME of the organisers do not allow "MAYBE"s and follow up on
everyone that RSVPs "YES" to make sure that they show up or phone.

I don't want to become such an organiser. I don't think that we
want me to become such an organiser. In fact, I can't become such
an organiser. It's not just that I'm not your mother, but I simply
don't have time to become such an organiser.

The rule remains in effect unless I say otherwise. Don't assume if
I don't mention it in my next message that everything is okay.

Anything that we do that makes more work for Kichiji will make
Kichiji annoyed to no end.

So let us QUICKLY bring the accuracy of our RSVPs back above 90% so
that we can drop the rule and I no longer have to follow up on

I thank us all in advance for our cooperation.

Please vote in our polls.

I'm looking forward to seeing us all at the meetings!
