Nordhoff Peak Loop Hike

Nordhoff Peak Loop Hike

Details

Today we were going to do a 20-miler to Topatopa Bluff, but with rising temps, we'll do this easier one instead:

Nordhoff Peak loop via a route you've never done before. New ridgeline trail. Suitable for strong adventurers who like something new when they hike.

With our early start, we'll be up at the top and on our way downhill before it gets above 76 degrees.

Here's the most accurate tabular forecast (red line shows temps by the hour) for Nordhoff Peak. We'll be there by 10:30AM and forecast is under 77 degrees at that time. Then it's downhill all the way! Change time to Sat 8:00AM to see current temps for our hike:

Pace is moderate ... let's take it easy and enjoy the views!

Trailblazing? No, I've done all these trails before ... just this week with Angie, Cyndee and Elyse. It took us over 4 hours to go 1.2 miles uphill. Photos here, but we'll go in opposite direction--down the ridge, so hike will be much easier:

Bushwacking? Yes, it's extremely brushy in parts.

Exploring? A little.

Time & Place: 7:30AM at trailhead in Ojai. Directions will be emailed to participants.

Estimated Stats: 12.4 miles/4,200'.
Level: If you're used to the stats, this is at your level.

Terrain: Fireroad, single track, very brushy trail.

Type of Hike: Lollipop Loop.

Pace: About 2mph overall average. For those fast-paced hikers, this is pretty leisurely. Our moving average will be higher, but there will be lots of stops to watch wildlife, take pics, and enjoy the sweeping views of the Ojai valley and the mountains to the north. It's gorgeous up there.

We'll stay together as a group, between leader and sweep. No rushing ahead; no tigers or turtles.

Bring: Please click this link and bring everything on the list: The ten essentials (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_Essentials). Note that the Ten Essentials includes water plus EXTRA WATER. A minimum of 3 liters recommended, plus the extra. You should also leave water in a cooler in your vehicle. Trekking poles a plus, headlamp, snacks, lunch.

Wear: Layers, hiking shoes/boots with lug soles. For protection on the brushy trail: Long pants/sleeves, strong hat, sunglasses.

Dogs: Fine, if they're used to this level. Email me if you'd like to bring your leashed dog.
