Trent Fowler's talk on secular spirituality explores the convergence of three facts:

  1. The modern world has produced spectacular advances in our understanding of the universe, but studying consciousness still requires that we ask subjects what their experience is like.

  2. Technology has made our lifespans ever longer and more comfortable, yet many of us are left with a nagging sense that there must be a deeper way to live our lives.

  3. It has become more difficult to intellectually defend the world's religions, but buried within them are valuable techniques for exploring and altering the tapestry of our subjective experience.

It now appears that the answer to the question of whether or not spirituality can be discussed in scientific terms is an unequivocal 'yes'. Building a toolkit for understanding and changing our minds, from the inside out, is a project that should be both interesting and important for anyone interested in the future. "

Directions to the famously hard-to-find Boulder Hackerspace (Solid State Depot): The easiest way to find it is, go down Arapahoe to 33rd, then go north on 33rd, almost to the end. Near the end of 33rd you'll see buildings on the left with a sign that says "Anco Engineering". Turn into the parking lot there. The Hackerspace is at the other end of the building. The sign on the door says Solid State Depot. The address is 1965 33rd Street, UNIT B, Boulder, CO, but if you use a map program, that'll only get you in the general vicinity (basically Walnut & 33rd); you need the directions to get to the door.
