The Future of the Commons.
A very broad, and critical, topic, first suggested by Tom Lowenhaupt. I hope we will generate presentations on a wide variety of areas that fit under this topic. Here are some starters:
Tragedy of the Commons, and possible solutions
Privatization, good and bad
Political battles: Occupy, health care,
Copyright, copyleft, and Fair Use
Climate change
Extraction industries: fracking, mining, drilling, (over) fishing
Internet: openness vs. threats
-- etc. etc. --
A few reading suggestions:
Lewis Hyde Common as Air: Revolution, Art, and Ownership (historical perspective)
Lawrence Lessig The Future of Ideas
David Bollier: news and perspectives on the commons (http://bollier.org/commons-short-and-sweet)
Because there are so many aspects to this topic, we'll do this in our Little Bigs format -- 5 minute presentations. We need lots of them -- so please send me your proposals ASAP.
Thanks gang.
