Hi Everyone,

In the 5 years that I have been involved in organizing and now hosting these meetups, I have never sent a personal message like this. I promise this will be my only post to the GDG Silicon Valley meetup mailing list about Mindful In May and our Google Developers fundraising team. This is something I truly believe can make a big difference as I just posted about on Google+ here:

Even though the challenge to spend 10 minutes a day being mindful for the entire month of May officially starts tomorrow, they have extended the deadline for people to participate until Saturday May 4th. If you want to join our mindfulness team, choose the "Join this team" link on the left  side of our fundraising page here before May 4th:

If you would rather just donate to charity:water on behalf of our team, you can choose the "Donate to this Cause" link on the top right of our fundraising page anytime until June 1st:

That's All Folks, Van

P.S. Forwarded message below is the first of the daily emails going out to Mindful In May participants like me.

Welcome to MIM....It's so exciting to be virtually connected to 1500 people from around the world who will be meditating together this May. Already we've raised over 45,000 dollars for Charity Water, reaching our first goal: the construction of an entire water project to sustain a village in Rwanda...

This is a MASSIVE achievement. Congratulations everyone for your efforts and participation...Thank you for your overwhelming generosity.

Due to the overwhelming response and excitement, we've decided to LEAVE THE REGISTRATION OPEN UNTIL THIS SATURDAY 4th MAY at 10pm. But anyone signing up will need to hop on board wherever we're up to (they will get access to all of the meditation downloads). You can tell your friends they haven't missed out.

If you haven't yet donated and would like to, you still can. If you want to have a bigger impact, fundraising will remain open through the entire month, so you can invite your friends and family to sponsor your challenge.

Now it's time to start meditating. Print off the meditation journal here

Mindfulness meditation, is the practice of paying attention to what is happening from moment to moment without judgment. Our minds are so often planning or worrying about the future or reflecting on the past, we miss the place where life is actually happening, here, in this moment.

The BODY SCAN is the first step to becoming more mindful. Read more about the body scan here. This is the daily meditation for week one.

ALL MIM MEDITATIONS are available for DOWNLOAD HERE using the password: MIM2013 (they are also available in the blue box, top right each day). But best to do them in order as guided by the daily newsletters.

Meditation
is living your life
as if it really mattered.
That means you gotta be there for it,
with awareness and a certain degree
of kindness towards oneself,
and an understanding of
the deep
interconnecedteness
of all life and beings.

~Jon Kabat Zinn

The emerging research on mindfulness is very exciting. Science has supported the fact that even just two months of regular meditation can increase our immune function, positively change the structure and function of our brains, and even help protect our DNA against some of the damaging effects of genetic ageing. There is research to suggest that just ten minutes of meditation, five days a week can improve our attention and focus.

Try it out yourself this month and notice how you start to feel as each day of the challenge goes by. See what you discover. Suspend your judgement till the end.

Welcome to the month of mindfulness,
