The name of this meetup has been changed from "Open Society" because lot of people misunderstood the meaning of "Open". Please also look at the post on the Message Board http://opensociety.me...
This meetup's aim is to explore ideas about what a good society is/can/should be. Once a viable consensus emerges, activism to do something to promote corresponding changes will begin.
Some background material for consideration:
Quoting George Soros An open society is a society which allows its members the greatest possible degree of freedom in pursuing their interests compatible with the interests of others...
This means being allowed to criticize what you do not like as well as doing what other's may criticize.
But such freedom has to be joined with a lively sense of social responsibility based on social awareness.
Such awareness ranges from trivial interests to the most profound. What is trivial and what is profound depends of personal judgments based on both objective and subjective criteria.
Interests relating to fashion may be quite trivial to some but important to others. But are there objective considerations that would show that some concerns are really
more important than others?
Does it really matter, for example, how fashionable an overcoat is on a freezing winter day if people do not have an overcoat at all?
So the discussion of what an open society is, involves quite a bit of philosophizing at certain points.
