GOT-OC Hiking in Weir Canyon

  • Feb 23, 2014 · 8:30 AM
  • Weir Canyon Wilderness Park

Time to make our first trip of the year out to Weir Canyon. This has been a very popular hike, and current weather forecast for this hike is cool and a little overcast at start time, with warming as we finish up.

Please take a couple minutes to review the directions. Plenty of street parking is available.   As usual, the meetup is at 8:30 and we step off at 8:40. If you are late I apologize in advance for leaving you behind.

Weir Canyon Wilderness Park, sometimes called the "secret park" (it's not even listed on the OCParks website) boasts a nice 4+ mile loop trail, with a series of  rises and drops that should make this trail a minor challenge in a few spots. We won't be moving fast like we do on a flat course, so I expect we will be done in just under 2 hours.

Summary: This is a relativly easy hike. This trail is great for training. The trail is well maintained. The scenery is plentiful during the spring when wild flowers are in bloom and the hills are carpeted with fresh vegetation. Stay on the trail at all times as the area is protected by the Irvine Ranch Reserve. The trail begins with a few rolling hills and a small stream crossing (may be dry in summer). At 2.5 miles, the trail comes close to a housing development. At this point, the trail makes a left turn and some hill work. The last 1/2 mile is a downhill walk back to your car on Avenida de Santiago (Street).

Please take a few minutes to get familiar with the directions:

From the 91 (riverside) freeway exit Weir Canyon and head south. turn right at Serrano Avenue. Turn left (South) at Hidden Canyon road. The housing development is called Anaheim Ridge Estates. Follow Hidden Canyon until it dead ends with Overlook Terrace. Park on the corner by the barrier.  Keep in mind this is a residential area. (Lat:[masked] Lon:[masked])

From the 55 Freeway exit Katella and head east towards the hills. Turn Left on Cannon St and then Right on Serrano Avenue. Turn right on Hidden Canyon road and follow the road until it dead ends.

From South County take the 5 North and exit Jamboree, turn North towards the hills and stay on Jamboree until it  ends at E Santiago Canyon. Turn left on E Santiago Canyon and then right on Cannon St. Turn Right on Serrano Avenue. Turn right on Hidden Canyon road and follow the road until it dead ends.

As always, bring water and sun protection.

Get Out There, Orange County - Let's go explore another trail in our own backyard.

I would love to be there but race time is 10:00 sharp and the Daytona 500 is one of the best races of the year.
