Presentation on Northwest Passage begins at 7pm.

Anyone interested in information on the BVI trip can ask questions after the Northwest Passage Presentation.

Northwest Passage

The Northwest Passage is a sea route through the Arctic Ocean (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctic_Ocean), along the northern coast of North America (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_America) via waterways amidst the Canadian Arctic Archipelago (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Arctic_Archipelago), connecting the Atlantic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Ocean) and Pacific Oceans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Ocean). Sought by explorers for centuries as a possible trade route, it was first navigated by Roald Amundsen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roald_Amundsen) in 1903–1906. Until 2009, the Arctic pack ice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polar_ice_packs) prevented regular marine shipping (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_transport) throughout most of the year, but climate change (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_change) has reduced the pack ice, and this Arctic shrinkage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctic_shrinkage) made the waterways more navigable.

Join us and hear first hand from our speaker, Richard Hudson, of his experiences sailing the Northwest Passage. Richard started sailing when he was 12, and he has owned several boats over the years. Richard sailed his schooner Rosemary Ruth all winter long when he lived in NY. In 2008, while living in New York, after looking for a high-latitude expedition boat for several years, Richard bought a 50' steel, centerboard schooner in France. Richard has been sailing that boat, Issuma, since then, about 30,000 miles from Europe to South America, to North America, the Arctic and the Pacific. Check out his website : http://www.issuma.com/rhudson .

Baby it's cold outside--let's talk cruising!

We are planning our first BVI Cruise (March17/18-24/25). Anyone interested in joining us--or just learning about the BVI should come get out of the cold and join us!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To signup for the BVI Cruise in March--please see the separate Meetup event on March 17th. https://www.meetup.com/gotham-city-sailing-association/events/40409082/

Highlights of out BVI Cruise (March17/18-24/25) include:

Norman Island (Cave snorkeling, Willie T.'s), Peter Island, Salt Island (Wreck fo the Rhone),Virgin Gorda (Baths and Bitter End Yacht Club), Marina Caye (Pussers), Jost Van Dyke (BBQ at Foxy’s).

The cost (aprox. $1395-$1495 double occupancy--single occupancy $2,095) includes the boat, damage waiver, fuel, marina park permits and fees, mooring fees, all drinks, all breakfasts, 1/2 lunches, 1/2 dinners. The exact cost and size of the boat depends on the number of crew we get.

This is a busy time of year and the boat needs to be reserved well in advance. For this reason, we will need your confirmation deposit ($900) as soon as you have signed up. We want at least 6 crew to run this trip. If we have more interest, there is a possibility to get a larger boat or run a second boat. No experience is necessary for this trip and you will definitely learn a lot about sailing. However when you respond, please email me your experience level. There is plenty of opportunities for kayakers, snorkelers, and scuba divers to enjoy.
