Format Changes

Here is a recent post to the MeetUp Beta Group-

Feb. 13th, 2010

Likes . . . Don't Likes

I like that we are sloooowly getting more control over the look and feel of the group's home page. The goal of the Got Wind and Water group is to Connect People to Go Sailing. Lot's of people in my area sail. Many, many, more want to, but don't 'know anybody'. The MeetUp platform provides a way for those people to connect on line to get offline, offland and On The Water.

Photos play a big role in my group. The majority of the members haven't gone sailing . . . yet.. Some are just lurkers, some wall flowers, some are just . . . nervous. The wealth of photos in our photo albums, taken by members while they were sailing illustrate that in this group, YOU CAN GO SAILING. For the 35% of the group that go sailing all the time, the photos give them a great way to share the experience.

So getting more control over the look and feel of the group's home page is very, very important. Thank you and all the developer's at for your efforts and the progress you've made. It is appreciated.

What I don't like is that the changes sometimes take two steps forward and one step back. This latest change pushed the Photo Module and Video Module down off of the page. For new or prospective members, this was a step back. The expand of the group's description for non-members was a step forward, the collapse might not help *New* members. The second time they visit, suddenly the description is gone. Whoops.

Allow us to put photos in the description and have it auto-collapse the 4th or nth time a new member visits the page - yes it would be tricky, but you get the idea.

Or create a new module that could go in the place of the Description Module that allows the organizer to create a 'permanent' headline and description to the left of a display of Recent Photos. Place that in the center above the Latest Activity and MeetUps Module and let the organizer change the height of that module to what ever works for their group.

Got Wind and Water

Is not a singles group, or a facebook group. Not a dog group (nothing wrong with dog groups) or a mommies group (nothing wrong with that either). We are more like a hiking or adventure group, and those groups really work with visuals. The focus is on the activity, and although the concept of 'MeetUp' fits, the words 'Sailing', 'Hiking', or 'Adventure' i.e. the activity itself, is more descriptive than the word 'MeetUp'. So let us label the 'MeetUp' module with a description that fits. As 'MeetUp' becomes part of the Lexicon we might even choose that word . . . later.

Heck, let us label all the modules. 'Latest Activity' is really the latest website activity, not the latest Offline, Offland, On The Water, activity of the group. I'd really Like That

By the way, the photo got your attention, didn't it?
