What we’re about
The Grants Cafe is a free professional development group for everyone with an interest in learning about grants. During the pandemic, the meetings are held virtually on the last Wednesday of the month from 12-1 PM, except for August and December, when we take a break. We invite speakers, including funders, to discuss "hot grant topics" such as career/business opportunities, grant proposal development, building proposal budgets, current trends in philanthropy, grants management, development planning, grant dilemmas, and more. You can expect to meet new people at all experience levels who share a passion for grants to support nonprofit causes and our communities. Everyone is welcome to contribute questions, discussion points, and suggested topics and speakers between meetups. The Grants Cafe has grown to over 700 members since 2016. We are able to offer the meetings free of charge through business sponsorships that pay the meetup.com fees.

What does it mean to be a foundation executive and activist at this time? What can funders and grant professionals do? And with whom? Join us for a conversation with Jake Goodman, Executive Director of Opportunity Fund, who has been asking and trying to answer these very questions at a time when our country has elected a president whose administration is actively expanding its power, drastically reducing federal arts and human service programs and grant funding, authorizing punitive measures against vulnerable populations, and defying the rulings of federal courts. For many of us, "And then they came for me" is feeling more resonant than ever before in our lifetimes. How can grant professionals partner with funders to meet these critical challenges? How do we maintain resilience?
Jake Goodman is the Executive Director of Opportunity Fund (www.theopportunityfud.org), a Pittsburgh-based foundation that supports the arts, as well as social and economic justice. Previously, Jake directed Auburn Seminary’s national LGBTQ campaign, Groundswell, and managed their media program to train multi-faith religious leaders to speak through the media about issues of justice. Jake was a founding member of Queer Rising, a NYC-based group that, in its heyday, demanded full equality and dignity for all LGBTQ+ people through direct action and civil disobedience. Jake was the Associate Director of Storahtelling (now Lab/Shul), worked for the Foundation for Jewish Camp, and was a LABA Artist Fellow at the 14th Street Y. As an actor, Jake performed at Actors Theatre of Louisville and the Berkshire Theater Festival. He is the co-creator and performer in “Kaddish,” a stage adaptation of Nobel Prize-winning author Imre Kertész’s book, Kaddish for an Unborn Child, which has been performed in theaters around the world.
