Trek to Malana - Himachal

  • May 24, 2014 · 7:00 AM

This trip is rated as easy to moderate.

This 1 week trip will provide us relief from the sultry summer of Hyderabad.  We will be visiting the following places:

 "Journey to Last Kingdom ’’

Malana is an ancient Indian village in the state of Himachal

Pradesh. This solitary village in the Malana Nala, a side valley of the Parvati Valley to the north-east of Kullu Valley, is isolated from the rest of the world. The majestic peaks of Chandrakhani and Deotibba shadow the village. It is situated on a remote plateau by the side of the torrential Malana river, at a height of 3,029 metres (9,938 ft) above sea level. Unaffected by modern

civilisation, Malana has its own lifestyle and social structure. People are

strict in following their customs. Malana has been the subject of various

documentaries, including Malana: Globalization of a Himalayan Village, and Malana, A Lost Identity. The existing speakers of the autochthonous language Kanashi, the traditional language of the inhabitants of Malana, number approximately 1700. According to the 1961 census, the language speakers were then 563, but today the population of Malana is at least three times as large as 40 years ago.  Malana is supposed to be the World's Oldest Democracy.

Rohtang Pass

Rohtang Pass, is a high mountain pass on the eastern Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas around 51 km from Manali. It connects the Kullu Valley with the Lahaul and Spiti Valleys of Himachal Pradesh.  this is at an altitude of 3978m.

Chanderkhani Pass

Pass is one of the most beautiful and serene passes at an altitude of 3660 metres located in the Kullu valley with views of the DeoTibba peak, Pir Panjal and Parbati range of mountains. The trek begins from the village of Naggar  21 kms from Manali and follows a circular route from Naggar to Chanderkhani Pass and back to Manali via Malana.

The path is through a forested cover of pine, deodar, and chestnut and then to

an alpine meadow at higher altitudes. You then descend down the Kullu valley to the unique and secluded town of Malana. The region is also known as the Valley of Gods. Legend has that Jamlu (the presiding deity at Malana), opened a basket containing the gods of Kullu at the Chanderkhani Pass and the strong winds blew the gods to their present abodes.

Manikaran Hot water springs - Manikaran is located in the Parvathi Valley between the River Beas and Parvathi.  It is at an altitude of 1760 m  and is located at 45kms from Kullu. This area is known for its Hot water springs and its beautiful landscapes. this place is revered by both the Hindus and the Sikhs.  The hot water here is supposed to be hot enough to cook rice.  The hot water springs are known to have curative powers.

Kullu - White Water Rafting.  Kullu is famous for River rafting. In Kullu valley this thrilling sport can  be enjoyed downstream on the Beas river from Pirdi to Jhiri on a track of about 16 km in length.

ago, Jamlu (the presiding deity of Malana) was carrying a basket containing the
