Habit Design #4: With Dr. David Sobel in Palo Alto (Limited Space, RSVP now!)
Details
UPDATE: FYI, David has provided a brief overview of what he'll be discussing on Thursday.
Beyond Behavior and Habit Design:
The Health Benefits of Beliefs, Moods and Success Experiences
We will briefly review some evidence suggesting that changes in confidence and self-efficacy (ie beliefs and moods) may be stronger predictors of health improvement than changes in behavior. The implications for refocusing behavior design on enhancing mood and feelings of success will be discussed. We will also explore when failure experiences in behavior change may build strength, resilience, and motivation for future success.
David S. Sobel, MD, MPH, is Medical Director of Patient Education and Health Promotion for The Permanente Medical Group, Inc. and Kaiser Permanente Northern California and a practicing physician in adult medicine at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Jose. Coauthor of eight books including: Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions, The Healing Brain, Healthy Pleasures, and The Healthy Mind, Healthy Body Handbook and What’s the Catch? How to Avoid Getting Hooked and Manipulated. Dr. Sobel’s more than 200 television appearances to educate the public about health issues include the Today Show, CNN, Hour Magazine, and a regular television news segment on KNTV, the ABC affiliate station in San Jose. He is the 2001 recipient of the Healthtrac Foundation Health Education Award given to a health educator who has made a substantial contribution to advancing the field of health education or health promotion through research, program development, or program delivery. He is project director for two programs that won the James A Vohs Award for Quality: Chronic Disease Self-Management Program Multi-Region winner in 2002 and The Self-Care/Healthwise Handbook Program runner-up in 1997. He is also a recipient of the TPMG Exceptional Contribution Award for 2005 for creating, developing and disseminating health education programs that support KP members throughout the continuum of care. He has also been named the 2010 Honorary Fellow of the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE), the highest award bestowed on a non-member who has made significant and lasting contributions to health and health education.

Happy Fall, Habit Designers! Thanks to all of you who recently have given Elise & I suggestions for future meetups. This next meetup incorporates some of those, so please keep 'em coming! http://img1.meetupstatic.com/3250963246259337556533/img/smileys/cool.gif
To appease you peninsula'ers out there, we're having our next meetup in Palo Alto; the folks at the Institute for the Future (http://www.iftf.org) have graciously offered to host us (thanks, Vivian!). We're also excited to have as our guest speaker Dr. David Sobel of Kaiser Permanente (http://xnet.kp.org/kpinternational/faculty/sobel.html); David's work has touched a wide range of habit design-related issues that we'll discuss.
-
RSVP now, there's limited seating and we've sold out every time!
-
We need 5-7 folks who would like to discuss what they're working on personally or professionally in habit design. It's super easy (casual, no slides), fun, and a critical component of our group's focus on "applied personal research". Please let me know asap if you'd like to give a talk and leverage the amazing brainpower of the group! We'll start off the evening with the talks...
-
START UP A DISCUSSION TOPIC: Feel free to start up a conversation about any habit design-related topic on our meetup discussion board (https://www.meetup.com/habitdesign/messages/boards/). We'll monitor the progress of the board and pick ones that might engender a fun discussion at future meetups.
-
NOMINATE A GUEST SPEAKER, HOST LOCATION, &/OR SPONSOR: Elise and I are always on the lookout for great speakers, locations, and sponsors but we need your help too! Thanks in advance!
-
RSVP FOR DINNER: Of course, as is our "habit", we will also try to find a nearby location for dinner (likely on The Ave) after the meetup. We need a rollcall for reservations, so please let Elise know if you're interested in joining us afterwards...
Mahalo,
Michael & Elise
P.S. FYI, we just launched Habit Design NYC (https://www.meetup.com/habitdesignnyc/) 2 weeks ago to great success! They've already reached 140 habit designers. Habit Design FTW! http://img1.meetupstatic.com/3250963246259337556533/img/smileys/cool.gif
