HackerNest Toronto April Tech Social feat. Girls in Tech w/ Chris Ye & Judy Sims

Kinda looks like this'll be our biggest event yet. PSYCHED? :D

Know someone who might be interested in starting a HackerNest in their city? Please email: [masked]. :) Looking for something/someone in particular? Connect using our Top Secret HackerNest Splinter Cell Communication Network.

HackerNest is all about uniting local tech communities. Girls in Tech focuses on empowering women and girls in tech. We're combining forces to make this month's Tech Social pretty damn special: we aim to kung-fu-kick gender stereotypes in the face by pushing hard for a 50:50 dudette-to-dude ratio at our event.

The tech penocracy is a setting sun. The old boys' club is, well, old. It's time to buck the trend. In the spirit of equal representation, we have short talks and "Ask Me Anything" Q&A from two very badass captains of industry.

Chris Ye is the co-founder and CEO of Uken Games, a red-hot mobile gaming powerhouse that boasts over 25 million customers worldwide. Judy Sims is the co-founder and CEO of Shopcaster, North America's largest marketplace for independent retailers.

Prepare your questions. On April 29th, you'll have the incredibly rare opportunity to pick the brains of two heavyweight entrepreneurial rocksuperstars. Don't squander it.

If you can only make it out to one tech event this year, make it this one.

Rough lineup:

19:00 - folks flood in, grab drinks, and start socializing

20:00 - welcome and sponsor intros

20:10 - short talk and Q&A: Chris Ye

20:40 - short talk and Q&A: Judy Sims

21:10 - back to chilling and socializing

23:00 - clean up and head out

Great topic that obviously resonated with alot of people which resulted in a huge turnout. Snacks and drinks were great, kudos to the sponsors!I would recommend seating be available for the presentation next time. It was difficult to see and hear the speakers with all the networking going on around the area. Also, the nametags didn't facilitate networking very well. You are dealing with a typically introverted group who can have trouble just walking up to someone they don't know. If the name tags had not just thier name but something about them that could start a conversation and/or identify thier goal for being there it would lead to better networking.

Agreed. "Are you a developer?" is not a very social conversation starter.

There are no wrong conversation starters and all efforts to start conversations should be encouraged.

Less than a week: two rockstar speakers (Judy Sims of Shopcaster and Chris Ye of Uken Games), beer, wine, and a mass-load of conversations, new friends, and a carte blanche to geek out in every manner you please. We're excited!

Interested in sponsoring, being a community partner, or volunteering? You'll be in good (fun) company. Drop us a note. Otherwise, see you there! 7pm onwards.

My daughter the engineer would love to come and help you out... but she's too busy being an investment banker in Tokyo. ...but note the lesson here: once a tekkie does not mean always a tekkie. She put in ten years of engineering as a factory manager, and that's a good base for more exciting stuff. -dlj.

UofT is looking to build an app! If you're an iOS or android dev looking to build your experience and have your name on an app that will be used by thousands of UofT students, give me a PM with your resume! Most of the dev will take place over this summer and a launch is set for this fall! Cheers
