Social Media and the Newsroom

Details

Following last month's packed meetup on "Telling Stories with Data", we're holding another event that features exciting and pioneering professionals working with data.

Our speakers are:

Phil Hahn is the Social Media Producer (http://www.ctvnews.ca/ctv-national-team/phil-hahn-1.818014) for CTV News, based in Toronto. He has worked as a producer and writer for CTVNews.ca and as an Assignment Editor for National News. In the past year he's acquired front-end development skills, and is increasingly working (and struggling) with code and data journalism. @philiphahn (https://twitter.com/PhilipHahn)

Roja Bandari is a data scientist at Twitter, mostly working on machine learning models for prediction and classification projects. Her work also includes spam and abuse detection. Before Twitter her research was mainly focused on social network analysis for news and community detection. @RojaBandari (https://twitter.com/RojaBandari)

Donie O’Sullivan and Peader Grogan work at Dublin-based Storyful, the first newswire of the social media age. During the UK Election, they led Storyful’s data-driven coverage pulling together a popular blog series using Twitter, network analysis and good ol’ fashioned journalism to identify the best connected politicians. @donie (https://twitter.com/donie) @padrg (https://twitter.com/padrg)

Our speakers will discuss the challenges in their work, and an all-group Q&A will follow. After the short talks, everyone is welcome to move across the street to the Long Stone (https://www.facebook.com/thelongstonepub) pub on Townsend Street for casual drinks and continued discussion.
