Join Hacks/Hackers NYC at 7 p.m. on April 3, when machine learning engineer Max Sklar presents a talk on natural language processing at Foursquare HQ.
Max will cover Foursquare's approach NLP. Specifically, he'll look at how Foursquare distinguishes positive and negative reviews, how they try to classify tips, and how they classify key phrases.
Max will also discuss the algorithms he uses (e.g., Bayesian classification, tokenization), his approaches to gathering training data, some of the common problems — and his solutions — that arise when applying natural language processing to his work.
To attend Automated Understanding, the Foursquare Way, RSVP today ($10, payable in advance) to Hacks/Hackers NYC.
Refund policy: Cancel at least 24 hours before the event (that is, no later than 7 p.m. April 2) to receive a full refund. We cannot issue refunds after that.
More about Max: Max Sklar, machine learning engineer Foursquare, taught data structures at NYU Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and has presented at QCon, RecSys and General Assembly.
Schedule:
6:30 p.m.: Doors, beer, pizza and socializing
~7:00 p.m.: Presentation by Max Sklar followed by Q&A

Some of the things that I'm planning to go over:
- Some design principles in writing algorithms that I've picked up over the last couple years working on NLP
- Some of our challenges in NLP - and some amusing bugs that we've overcome, and where we need to improve in the future.
- Get a glimpse of some of our debug screens for sentiment analysis
- Some of the baseline algorithms that serve as a good starting point for work on NLP: Bayesian ngram Models, dirichlet smoothing, TF-IDF

I'm working on fleshing out the content now. We have some interesting results to share. Does anyone have anything in particular they'd like to see covered tomorrow?

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
