Programming on deadline/ Free tech tools for journalists
Details
One of the challenges for programmers working in newsrooms is meeting the immediate demand from higher ups, who want content for a 24-hour news cycle. Often the best solution is to break out of that cycle. When that's not an option there are dozens of tools to quickly put data up online and tell stories digitally.
We'll run over some options to help non-programming journalists work with data and get it online. Allan Vestal, an MU student working at IRE, will talk about his experiences as an intern on the Data Desk (http://projects.latimes.com/index/) at the Los Angeles Times and how he started down the journalist-programmer path.
We also want to hear from you. What are issues do you face on deadlines? What are the options and what solutions can we work through as a group? Bring your own stories and let's see what we can solve together.
