How to Connect with a Mobile News Audience

Details

Mobile phones have emerged as the screen of choice for news consumption. What tools, tactics and tech does your newsroom need, whether you're new to the game or an established player?

This weekend, Hacks/Hackers Delhi (https://www.facebook.com/groups/hackshackersdelhi/) brings together industry leaders for a free-wheeling discussion on this theme. Each will speak to how their publication/product approaches this challenge and what seems to be working/failing.

As always, this is an informal unconference for community-driven learning and skill-sharing. We will have a series of 10-minute talks or presentations followed by five-minute Q&As. So far, we have:

• Catch News (http://www.catchnews.com/), promoted by the Rajasthan Patrika Group, leads the pack of digital journalism platforms launched over the past year in experimenting with mobile-only content, with formats like X-Packs. Editor-in-Chief Shoma Chaudhury (http://twitter.com/ShomaChaudhury) will represent them.

• Quintype (http://www.quintype.com/) is a data-driven content management system for mobile-first newsrooms. Founder-CEO Amit Rathore (http://www.linkedin.com/in/amitrathore) will represent them.

• InShorts (http://inshorts.com/), incubated by The Times of India's TLabs, curates news for mobile and short-on-time users by distilling posts from mainstream media to just the facts in 60 words. Founder-CEO Deepit Purkayastha (http://www.linkedin.com/pub/deepit-purkayastha/7/137/575) will represent them.

• Hindustan Times (http://www.hindustantimes.com/) is currently going through a digital-first integration of it's English, Hindi and Business newspapers/newsrooms. Chief Content Officer Nicholas Dawes (https://in.linkedin.com/pub/nic-dawes/94/816/150), who is leading this transition, will make closing remarks on how large publishers are dealing with mobile-related challenges and opportunities.

• Quintillion Media (http://www.thequint.com/topic/Quintillion+Media) is the force behind some very interesting digital news platforms/products today including The Quint, YouthKiAwaaz, Sheroes, Quintype, etc. Founder Raghav Bahl (https://in.linkedin.com/pub/raghav-bahl/a5/57/2b5), who also founded Network 18, will make closing remarks on why events like this are important for a heathy news-meets-tech community in India.

The event will close with an open networking session and chai-shai for the attending journalists, technologists, product heads, investors and entrepreneurs.

We are still lining up more speakers, so if you know anyone with a great product/platform in the mobile x news space, let us (the hosts) know via Facebook Messages. Do RSVP on this event's Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/events/896131337132421/) too + invite others you think might be interested.

Here are recaps of some of our past meetups:

• India's first data journalism bootcamp (https://storify.com/sanatsinha/dbootcampdelhi)

• Hack4Change, a hackathon for women's rights (http://www.rajanzaveri.com/rajanzaveri/HacksnHackers/HHHackathonDec2013/hack_hackers.html)

• Showcase of news/newstech startups in India (https://storify.com/AnikaG/an-afternoon-with-indian-news-tech-startups)
