* Start at Jira
* Look at unresolved issues, sort by last-updated to find what is current
* Fixing docs is one way to learn the process (opening a JIRA, submitting a patch, etc)
* Hang out on IRC: #hadoop, #hbase, etc
* Provide as much information as you can
* Look for noob flags, easy flags for easy JIRAs to knock out
* Use the watch list to track issues you care about
* Hadoop is large enough and has enough production that the process is heavy to protect the core -- don't get frustrated
* Off-jira emails can help get committer attention for patches
* Check git/svn logs to find ou to talk to for a file/area.
