Newton Canyon plus

The Hike: This hike takes us on the Backbone trail along Newton Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains. We will start out by ascending the trail to the South and crossing over Kanan-Dume Road on top of tunnel # 3. A good portion of the this trail is shaded by small oak trees and there should be many Spring flowers in the fields and numerous birds all around. The trail slowly drops down into Newton Canyon, then climbs back up to meet Latigo Canyon Road, where we will continue on about a 2.5 mile loop to add some distance to the hike and return via Newton canyon to the parking area. We are looking at a total distance of between 7 and 8 miles with about 1000 ft. total elevation gain.

This hike is posted on two Meetup groups - if you are a member of both groups - please RSVP on only one.

Directions: From the Ventura Freeway (101) in Agoura, take Kanan-Dume Road towards the beach for about 8 miles. The parking area is on your right after the second tunnel and just before the third tunnel. If you are coming from PCH it is on your left just after passing through the first tunnel.  I encourage car pooling and I may have some space  from Pasadena or the Universal City Red Line station parking lot. Please contact Lee Tracy for details.

What to bring: Ample water and a snack or sandwich for a short break about midway, maybe some sunscreen, insect repellent,  and comfortable shoes.

Great hike - awesome group of hikers. I promised flowers and birds on this hike - Judy and Chris captured the many varieties of Spring flowers in their photos. While we don't see any birds in the pictures, we certainly heard many. Here are some stats for this hike - posts the leg from Kanan-Dume to Latigo Canyon Rd as a 400 ft. gain - I believe they were just looking at the difference in elevation between Kanan-Dume and Latigo Canton, which is actually 543 ft. - the total climbing elevation for that section of the hike was 967 ft. (completed by Willie and Trinity) - we added another 2.5 miles and 595 ft. climbing elevation with the loop east of Latigo Canyon Rd. (Backbone Trail to Newton Motorway to Latigo Canyon Rd. to Backbone trail). Summary: 7.5 miles 1562 ft. total climbing elevation.

Just so there is no confusion - I have been advised some maps have the tunnels numbered (and I believe there are numbers on the tunnel) - what I have been referring to as tunnel #3 is actually called tunnel #1, but if you are driving from the 101 freeway yo will still pass through 2 tunnels and see the parking lot on your right just before the third.

We have 10 more hikers from Early Bird - should be a nice sized group. We should have nice, mild temperatures for Saturday.

Hey Lee - thanks for organizing. I'd be interested in carpooling with you from Pasadena or No. Hollywood.
