O'Reilly's - Box Forest Circuit

10.9 km hike. Class 4 (Australian Standards). Approximate hike time is 4 to 5 hours, including mid-hike lunch. Postcard-perfect waterfalls! This track branches from the Border Track 1.8 km from the part entrance and leads directly to Picnic Rock and Elabana Falls. It runs through rainforest, pass impressive stands of smooth, pink-barked brush box before reaching the falls. Similar brush box in other parts of the World Heritage area have been radiocarbon dated at 1500 years, making these giant trees the oldest ever carbon-dated on Australia's mainland.

We'll walk this circuit in a clockwise direction and exit via Elabana and Picnic Rock. We'll stop mid-way along the hike for lunch.

What to bring: good hiking boots, hat, sunscreen, mosquito/leech repellent, packed lunch, water bottle, first aid kit.

Where to meet: meet at 9:15am right in front of the entrance to the O'Reilly's Gift Shop, which is next to The Mountain Cafe.
http://www.oreillys.com.au/gift-shop. Hike departs at 9:30am.

Map: http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/parks/lamington/pdf/lamington-green-mtns-map.pdf

How to get to O'Reilly's Gift Shop: http://www.oreillys.com.au/how-to-get-here As you're travelling away from Canungra you'll pass O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat and you'll reach the end of the road where the large parking lot is. Keep walking straight up the street and The Mountain Cafe and Gift Shop are on the right-hand side of the footpath.

Carpooling: Should you wish/need to carpool the best way is to put your request down when you RSVP, together with your suburb where you are coming from. Naturally we can never guarantee a lift with other members.
How much should riders contribute to carpooling costs? Anyone who owns a car know the most expensive part of a trip is not the petrol, but the running costs (registration, insurance, depreciation, etc.). A suggestion (based upon what one of the other hiking Meetup organizers recommends) as to what is a reasonable contribution is up to $20 EACH depending on where the rider is coming from. I recommend that the carpool driver and carpool rider discuss costs in advance to avoid possible misunderstandings/disappointments.

Personal responsibility: We take no responsibility for any mishaps that may occur as a result of our activities as we are not a formal association or organisation and have no public liability insurance. It is up to each individual to make sure they are capable of attempting this activity. All individuals who sign-up for this event automatically agree to take individual responsibility for their actions and will not hold the organisers liable.

Rain options: If it's sprinkly rain, I'll still go. If it's stormy weather, I'll post a cancellation on this web site by 7:00am that morning.

Cheers,
Nali

Anybody on the south side still got a spot in a car or would like a lift from me, let me know...I don't really want to drive all that way alone...

    • Nali

Hmmm... I think 6' 2" is a bit cramped. I'm happy for you to join us and make 5 passengers (at least I'm tiny), but I agree with Roy that you're likely to be more comfy in Maggie's car.

Thanks everyone - now changed my RSVP to +1 as I have a friend who'd like to join us, so will drive in my car - which means I can give someone a lift if there's anyone left over who needs one. Look forward to meeting you all tomorrow!

Hi Maggie, Welcome to the group! I'd love to carpool with you, particularly since you're in West End too. However, I have already arranged car rental and carpooling with Jacquie and Muhammed. Both Bruce and Roy have indicated interest in carpooling but I haven't heard back from them yet.

    Hi Bruce and Roy,
If you're still seeking to join my carpool and split costs, can you please confirm by 5pm this Friday?

    Thanks,
    Nali

    • Nali

Thanks for confirming, Roy. Glad that you'll join the carpool with Jacquie, Muhammed and me, particularly since I've already paid for the car rental. Which place will you meet us - Abel in Fortitude Valley at 7am or in front of South Brisbane Railway Station (QPAC taxi rank side of Grey St) at 7:30am?

      September 12, 2013

    • Roy C.

7:30 at South Brisbane Train station is best for me.

Yes I noticed that...a bit late with the offer....let me know if cant fit all in.
    See you there.

    September 12, 2013

    • Nali

Hi Bruce, According to Abel, we can fit a total of 5 people but it'd be a bit of a squeeze in the Nissan Micra (sorry, I should have clarified this in my comment to you and Roy below). You're still welcome to join Jacquie, Muhammed, Roy and me if you want to. But I figure it'd be best for you to stick to Maggie's carpool now that you've replied to her offer.

Hi Bruce...will check times and distances and ring some time today with details.

I am happy to carpool....can drive and take 3 passengers if needed...I live in West End.

Nali - put me first on the waitlist for your rental. I'd prefer to get a lift with someone - happy to share driving - have driven that winding road a few times over the years. Anyone else offering a lift - let me know.

    • Nali

Hi Bruce - nice to hear from you again. If Jacquie, Samantha or Muhammed pull out, I'll be in touch. Cheers,

    • Nali

Hi Bruce - Samantha's pulled out from the hike and the carpool on 15 Sept. If you'd like a lift and can share costs (approx. $23/person, depending upon petrol costs that day), can you please meet me at either Abel car rental at 7am or in front of the QPAC taxi stand (on Grey Street, South Brisbane), opposite the South Brisbane Railway Station at 7:30am?

  • jacquie s.

Could I suggest an earlier start? Starting at 7:30 am is often a better time as it is cooler and more wallabies..birds are around.Just a suggestion

    September 10, 2013

    • Nali

Would love to, but unfortunately car rental does not open until 7am and i am not very keen on renting the day before since we then would pay for 2 days. I too would prefer earlier start if i had my own vehicle or car rental pickup and drop off times were outside 7am to 3pm. Thanx for suggestion anyway.

May I ask who is the organiser of this hike? There doesn't appear to be one..

    September 9, 2013

    • Nali

Hi Samantha - I'm the hike organiser.

      September 9, 2013

  • Roy C.

I am also looking for a lift to O'reilly's

    September 9, 2013

  • Nali

    Hi Samantha, Muhammed and Jacqui,
I've booked a hire vehicle from Abel car rental, a Nissan Micra (fits total of 4 people, includes 500km), for 24 hours. Estimated costs: car rental ($35), insurance ($37) petrol (about $20) - split costs amongst 4 people would be about $23/person, more if fewer carpoolers. I suggest we all meet Abel between 7 - 7:15am on 15 Sept: Abel City/Valley, 276 Barry Pde, Fortitude Valley. Abel tel: 3257 3200. Another meeting point option: 7:15 and 7:30am in front of South Brisbane train station. Please let me know which meeting point suits - I know we're all relying on public transport to get to/from meet-up spot.

If you're still interested, can we all email each other our phone numbers and preferred contact method (eg. SMS, phone, email) in case of any change of plans. If later you opt out, can you please let me know by noon, 14 Sept, since others might need lifts?

The above are just some ideas. Other ideas re: coordination arrangements are welcome. :-)

Hi Muhammed - I can meet you at Abel in the Valley. Samantha, I can meet you at South Brisbane Railway Station. I'll email you both my mobile.

I'm in for the car Definitely..Mine is old and unreliable...plus..I'm a shocking driver so prefer someone else to drive

    September 8, 2013

  • jacquie s.

My car is not reliable anymore so I would be into hiring a car with a few people I did this walk with The Gold coast group but accidently deleted all my pics :(

    September 4, 2013

  • Nali

Hi Samantha and Muhammed, I'll need to catch a lift with someone too (I'm in West End). If we're unable to catch a lift, would the three of you (and perhaps others) be interested in co-hiring a rental car from Fortitude Valley and sharing costs?
