See Hanging Lake...frozen

  • Mar 8, 2013 · 7:00 AM
  • Glenwood Canyon

Folks we did this last Febuary and it was an amazing hike.

If you are driving print this off and take it with you. Don't print it off and leave it at home!!!

We'll meet at the Wooly Mammoth PnR. We can leave vehicles there overnight with no fee. To get there go West on I-70. Take exit 259. Turn right at the light and immediately get into the left turn lane. Turn left at the light and go up the hill. The lot will be on your left. We'll meet along the wall on the South side of the PnR. We'll leave this PnR at 8:00 am. You'll be fighting rush-hour traffic so allow for that.

We will drive to Glenwood (Carbondale), eating lunch in Glenwood at the Village Inn (it's on your left right after you exit I-70 and I'm sure they'll be able to feed us), on Friday and spend the afternoon snowshoeing near Carbondale. Then I use a motel in Glenwood that gave us a really great rate for our rooms. At this time of year they are dying for business.

Directions to the snowshoe after lunch: When you get to Glenwood take highway 82 to Carbondale. From Carbondale take CO 133 South. After 12.5 miles, pull over at the Avalanche Campground sign on the left. Cross over the bridge and in less than a quarter mile, there is a gate that is closed in the winter time. The snowshoe starts there. There is space for only about 5 vehicles at this spot, however there are more places to park at turnouts on the Crystal river side of CO 133 just north and south of Avalanche Creek rd. The campground is about two miles up Avalanche Creek road at which point the Avalanche Creek trail starts in the Maroon Creek/Snowmass wilderness area. I have never done this snowshoe. I am getting this out of a book. My book says it's an easy to moderate snowshoe, an out and back, with good snow in most seasons.

There is no way I'm going to be able to keep up with all of you people so you'll have to contact me. [masked]-9698.

A restuarant for dinner will be added soon.

If you want to jump into the hot springs after dinner that's up to you. Make your own arangements.

On the way home on Saturday morning we stop and hike up to Hanging Lake. You will need traction devices and you may need your snowshoes. Don't attempt this without some kind of traction devices at least. Last year the trail was solid ice all of the way up. It was a really beautiful hike.

If you show up half of your deposit goes to your room. The other half I keep. Once the trip fills up if you back out after Feb. 15th or don't show up I keep your deposit.

Here is where we'll be staying: Cedar Lodge Motel. Glenwood Springs. [masked]-6579. Remember to tell them you are with my group.

    March 7, 2013

  • Lisa

Hello All - decided to quit stressing about the road conditions and go visit friends who live outside Glenwood Springs on Saturday night...so I am driving myself and skipping the carpool location. I just don't want anyone to think that I'm bailing when I don't show up at the PnR! I will see you all @ the Village Inn around 12:30 pm. Looking forward to it! My cell is 602.418.1919....just in case....

  • Debra E.

I will be driving my van and have room for one other person (there are 3 in the car already). if someone needs a ride. I will plan on returning Sat. but of course weather will dictate the outcome!

    March 6, 2013

  • Bill B.

I plan to drive from the PnR and I can carry three passengers. If the roads are open I will be going.

    March 4, 2013

    • Terry G.

Friday looks good so far but Saturday might be bad. I think people should be prepared to stay another night if conditions are bad at the Divide. Denis and I are planning on coming back Sunday morning if anybody needs a ride.

      March 5, 2013

    • Lisa

Hi Bill - forecast is looking better so I would like to confirm a place in your car ...if still available...I'm open to staying Saturday if weather dictates...but my preference would be to come back Saturday. Let me know if that is your game plan as well! Thx, Lisa

I am among the (apparently nonexistent) minority of people who is expecting to show up at Park and Ride and secure a ride. I am nice and pay great gas money. Marilyn, why don't you come, and if we can't find rides we'll ride together.

      March 5, 2013

  • Lisa

I was just planning on showing up at the PNR and arranging carpools there - but if most people already have their arrangements made - I can drive and I can take Marilyn. Having said that - if the weather is going to be bad (especially for driving) I probably won't go....don't worry, I will not back out on any of my financial commitments!! Waiting another day or so to see what the driving conditions are going to be like....

    Hey Everybody............
I am staying one more night ( Sat) for this trip. Would any of the group want to also stay Sat night and join a small group of back country explorer's for a guided snowmobiling tour of the high timbers White River National Forest?

It is 10 am-1pm Sunday. Cost is $99.00. One to a machine, or $[masked] to a machine. It's a real hoot and the trails are [acked and fantastic. They have over 5 ft of snow!

If you can contact me by Feb 25th we will work out the reservation details here is the info.....

http://sunlightmtn.com/activities/snowmobiling A deposit of $50.00 by the end of day the 27th will seal the deal with the balance to them when we arrive at Sunlight Sunday. Deposits are refundable only up to 3 days before the tour.

Contact the motel on your own for the extra night reservation.

If they dont do roll-a-way beds maybe you could bring sleeping bag and camp on the floor? Thats what we always did with our kids when we were a family of five.

    February 15, 2013

  • Bill B.

I have reserved a room at the Cedar Lodge. It has two queen beds so I am looking for someone to share the room. Your half will be about $30 (cheap).
